Chicken vs. Egg was a Splatfest event in Splatoon 2. It was held globally. It was announced on social media on 21 July 2020 and was announced in-game on 7 August 2020.^[1] Results from all regions were combined. It was a rematch of the original Chicken vs. Egg Splatfest from March 2018.

Details

On the 21st of July 2020, the 3rd anniversary of Splatoon 2's release, the Japanese Splatoon Twitter announced that three additional Splatfests were planned to be held before the end of the year, and that this one was to occur first, despite the North American Live from Squid Research Lab Tumblr describing the Mayo vs. Ketchup rematch as a "bonus one-time Splatfest".^[2][3]

The Splatfest theme was about the famous dilemma that asks whether the chicken or the egg came to existence first. Continuing from Mayo vs. Ketchup (2020), the increased 100× Battle rates that were originally advertised for Chaos vs. Order were still in effect for this Splatfest.^[4]

The full name of each choice was "THE CHICKEN came first" and "THE EGG came first". The team name portion of Splatfest titles was "Chicken" and "Egg".

Chicken vs. Egg featured the eighth Shifty Station layout, The Bunker Games.

• Marina's confusion at Chaos vs. Order not being the final Splatfest in Super Mushroom vs. Super Star suggests that this and the other two rematch Splatfests are considered non-canonical. This is further backed up with how Chaos vs. Order was described as the previous Splatfest in the Japanese dialog, despite the three Splatfests in between.
• This Splatfest marked the fourth time a theme was repeated in a region it did not originate in, as the rerun was held in Japan where the original Splatfest was not. The other three instances of this are Cats vs. Dogs, Rock vs. Pop, and Money vs. Love.
  • This also marked the first time the rerun was held in its original regions in addition to the new ones.
• The new promo illustration for this Splatfest loops on itself horizontally, symbolizing the life cycle of a chicken.
• In all languages except Japanese (which was additionally the only language to have new dialogue for this Splatfest, as it originally didn't happen in Japan), in this Splatfest's results dialogue, Marina states the fact that scientifically, the correct answer is that the egg came first, contrary to the results.
  • However, the scientific answer is reflected in the popular vote.
