  • Abby Nissenbaum Releases New EP “Don't Want to Cry”

  • Nashville-based indie-rock singer-songwriter Abby Nissenbaum released her sophomore EP “Don't Want to Cry” on October 18, 2024.
This nmarks her first project in a year and eight months since the 2023 EP “Unreliable Narrator”.
The EP comprises 5 songs, which Abby Nissenbaum worked with producer Steph Trivison for over a year.

Abby Nissenbaum told C-Heads Magazine about the EP, “'Don't Want To Cry' is an EP about losing power and slowly, but surely, gaining it back. It touches on the effects of trauma and the process of healing. Some of the previous songs are a little more vulnerable, but I love that it ends on a more positive track.”
She added, “I hope this EP feels like chatting with a protective and uplifting friend, reminding you that you have so much personal power even when you don't feel like you do.”
  • Abby Nissenbaum explained about some tracks for the EP.

    “Limerence”
“Limerence is a collaboration between myself and pop producer Steph Trivison (as heard on Amazon Prime, The Grammy Awards, The Golden Globes, ESPN, BBC, the Life is Strange video game series, the Care Bears, and more). We wanted to create a modern indie pop sound with throwback elements to queer synthpop bands of the early aughts (e.g., Uh Huh Her). I actually wrote the song on the bass, and Steph sampled the bass line from my demo in the final song, which you can hear as the lead-in instrumental. She built some really cool, bright synth sounds around it and we added in some ghostlike operatic background vocals for an eerie, almost deranged feel to the song.”

  • “Real Friends”
“'Real Friends' explores the complicated, dissonant feelings surrounding people who once meant the world to you but are no longer in your life. The song touches on themes of betrayal, backstabbing, and broken trust, and someone told me a while back that so-called 'friends' who engage in such behaviour are not your true friends, just 'some motherfuckers you know.' It was such a simple and brusque statement that made me laugh during a hard time, and it's a good reminder that while you can't 'un-know' or 'un-meet' people who have caused you harm, you can relegate them to the category of 'terrible individuals that [I] happen to know.'”

    “Perfect Crime”
“We all know someone who's gotten away with something they shouldn't have. I wrote 'Perfect Crime' as an empowerment anthem for people who have been harmed, silenced, and/or stigmatized by wrongdoers, and I hope it can serve as a reminder that the universe will eventually dole out justice in one form or another. 'Perfect Crime' is a single from my forthcoming EP, Don't Want to Cry. The lyrics delve into serious themes such as mental health and toxic relationships, but I still wanted all the songs to be catchy, upbeat, powerful, and ultimately hopeful.”

“'Don't Want To Cry' is an empowerment anthem for anyone who's been harassed, bullied, or made to feel small by others, and the chorus begins with the lyric, 'I don't want to cry, just want to drink French 75s at the dive.' In essence, 'I don't have time to be upset about whatever obnoxious harassment you're spouting, so I'm just going to go have fun and forget about you.”
