The Republic o North Ossetie–Alanie (Roushie: Республика Северная Осетия — Алания; Ossetian: Республикӕ Цӕгат Ирыстон — Алани, Respublikæ Tsægat Iryston-Alani listen (help·info)) is a federal subject o Roushie (a republic). Its caipital is the ceety o Vladikavkaz. Its population accordin tae the 2010 Census wis 712,980.[6]
Name
[eedit | eedit soorce]In the last years o the Soviet Union, as naitionalist muivements swept throughoot the Caucasus, mony intellectuals in the North Ossetian ASSR cried for the revival o the name o Alanie, a medieval kinrick o the Alans, ancestors o the modren-day Osseties. The term o "Alanie" quickly became popular in Ossetie daily life throu the names o various enterprises, a TV channel, poleetical an civic organisations, publishin hoose, soccer team, etc. In November 1994, the name o "Alanie" wis offeecially addit tae the republican title (Republic o North Ossetie–Alanie).[11]
