Glyph origin

edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *naːʔ, *naːs) : semantic (heart) + phonetic (OC *naː, slave) – angry.

Etymology

edit

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan, perhaps from the same word family as (OC *naːʔ, “effort”). Compare Proto-Kuki-Chin *nuar (to sulk; to agitate), whence e.g. Mizo nàwrh (to sulk; to be displeased) (Schuessler 2007).
