[edit]Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *k/ʔ-r(ə/a)w (“to fry, roast, cook”). Cognate with 烄 (OC *keːws, *kreːwʔ, “to burn on a pyre; to pan-fry, saute”), Burmese ကြော် (krau, “to fry”) (STEDT #5862).
