File:Sex Non-Conforming Flag.svg

edit

File:Sex Non-Conforming Flag.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

cat:Intersex variations

edit

Do you think there needs a different category for intersex traits ("symptoms/characteristics"), separated from or parenting variations? Web-julio (talk) 17:14, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. I think it depends on how many intersex traits already have their own categories. If there aren't many such categories, having them share with Intersex Variations (or retitle it "Intersex Traits and Variations") seems reasonable to me. Intervex (talk) 03:07, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given

edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:20, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

SVGs and autotracing

edit

Hello!

I noticed your edits on some images in Category:Fake SVG. Thank you for your contributions and tackling this very backlogged category.

These uploads seem to have been made using an auto-tracing tool. This usually leads to poor SVGs, having a large filesize, uneven lines and rounded corners where there were straight lines and sharp corners before, and "flakes". You can see this in File:Jawp 2020 Semi-Protection Sample-01.svg ("flaking" in the top left corner of the lock's body), File:Lock Icon.svg (uneven keyhole), and File:Flag of Czechoslovakia - Vaporwave pink edition (Unofficial civil).svg (the star's edge. I've corrected this one now). You can see a more obvious example of what I mean in File:Bad conversion from raster to vector.svg.

This kind of vectorization is generally marked as in need correction and is added to Category:SVG images with poorly traced elements. If it's possible for you, please upload a hand-drawn vectorization of these images. If you need help, you're welcome to ask in the Graphics village pump or the Illustration workshop.

Again, thank you for your work and I encourage you to keep up the drive to contribute! Rubýñ (Scold) 03:19, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

My apologies. The images you're flagging were indeed made with Inkscape's tracing tool, which looked to my untrained eye to be doing a good enough job. I will stop using this tool. Intervex (talk) 04:37, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, auto-tracing tools like that tend to produce these sort of errors. They're fine as a starting point, in my opinion, specially with more complex shapes, but their results need polishing in the majority of cases. With simpler shapes, like the locks, it's usually faster and yields better results to draw them by hand. I personally find it easier to use shape tools like ellipses, triangles, and rectangles and then using the pathfinder ("boolean operations" in Inkscape) to join them together and form more complex shapes, compared to bothering with the pen tool. Of course, you can use whatever you find most comfortable. — Rubýñ (Scold) 05:55, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I was mistakenly operating under an assumption that flags that are actually flown as flags - and this flag I have seen flown at multiple government offices - are not eligible for copyright. I have since double checked and realized this assumption was wrong. My apologies, and I'm now going to go through my past uploads to double check nothing else falls in this boat. Long term, I'd like to contact the TRC and ask for permission to upload it but until I have a clear go ahead I support the speedy deletion. Sorry! Intervex (talk) 04:00, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just went through all of my past uploads. There was one other flag I uploaded under the same misconception, which I have requested a speedy deletion of here: File:Intersex and Huu-ay-aht.png. Again, I apologize for my error and will be a lot more vigilant going forward when dealing with copyright issues beyond the simple geometry & clear free licenses that I already tend to stick to. Intervex (talk) 04:29, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Don't sweat it too much! We all make mistakes, and it's very good that you took the time to check your past uploads for mistakes. I really commend you for this and for making the effort to improve.
Just for thoroughness' sake: yes, flags can be copyrighted despite being flown publicly. {{PD-flag}} is used when the flag is too simple to copyright (for example, the flag of Germany being just three stripes, or the intersex flag being a ring in a plain background). Designs like the one you linked are creative works that are copyrighted by default and need explicit licenses that clear them for free use (like CC0).
I hope you keep up your good work. Cheers, and happy editing! — Rubýñ (Scold) 05:13, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Out of concern that somebody else might wind up with the same misconception I did, I've drafted a new section on Flags to add to Commons:Threshold_of_originality#Logos_and_flags. Right now the PD:flag template tag directs people there despite the section not actually talking about flags. My draft is here: User:Intervex/LogosAndFlags. If you have a bit of time to double check I've got this right, it'd be appreciated! Thanks :) Intervex (talk) 00:58, 18 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Looks like the consensus is they're out of scope, and I don't have any evidence otherwise. They're not my uploads/designs, I just fixed the SVGs because they were tagged as bad SVGs and I was systematically working through the pride flags with that tag.
