Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST)
BCAST is striving for international excellence on both fundamental and applied research on solidification of metallic materials. BCAST sees itself as a reliable source of both new knowledge and new solidification technologies for the metallurgical industry. -
Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) Theses
Theses for the Special Research Institutes, BCAST -
Brunel Composites Centre
Brunel Composites Centre (BCC) sits between the knowledge base and industry, supporting partners in industry by transfering academic research in novel composites processing and joining technologies into industrial application. -
Brunel Innovation Centre
The Brunel Innovation Centre (BIC) is a world class research and technology centre that sits between the knowledge base and industry offering high quality research in an innovative environment focused on non-destructive testing, condition and structural health monitoring, power ultrasonics and allied technologies covering a range of materials, sensors, electronics and software systems supporting partners in industry to transfer academic research into industrial application. BIC pursues initiatives that span national and international platforms including Innovate UK, EPSRC and EC. The Centre has been building a strong portfolio of projects in line with its multinational interdisciplinary vision. -
Brunel Institute for Bioengineering (BIB)
Brunel Institute for Bioengineering (BIB) is a multidisciplinary innovative research and development organisation where ideas turn into reality within industrial timescales. Founded in 1983 by Professor Heinz Wolff, it is a financially self-supporting organisation specialising in science and engineering for space, health care and contract work for industry. -
Health Economics Research Group (HERG)
HERG's strategic focus is on the economic evaluation of a broad range of clinical and health service technologies and its dual aim is to provide applied, policy-relevant research whilst developing and refining methods to increase the rigour and relevance of such studies. -
Institute of Communities and Society
The Institute of Communities and Society (ICS) – led by Prof Meredith Jones, Director – supports inventive and imaginative research that is truly interdisciplinary. We focus on the social, community and cultural aspects of pressing contemporary issues including migration and movement, social unrest, intersectional inequalities, and institutionalised poverty. -
Institute of Digital Futures
The Institute of Digital Futures (IDF) – led by Prof Abdul Sadka, Director – pulls together expertise from across the three academic colleges at Brunel to deliver on the “Digital” Strategic Challenge Area of Brunel Research Strategy 2030 while putting user communities at the heart of the development processes thereby enhancing the global citizen’s quality of life. -
Institute of Energy Futures
The Institute of Energy Futures (IEF) – led by Prof Savvas Tassou, Director – has a holistic approach to the energy costs of food distribution, bringing together researchers from a range of disciplines, as well as mainstream engineering research. We have particular strengths in refrigeration, heating and cooling and in environmental design. -

Institute of Health, Medicine and Environments
The Institute of Health, Medicine and Environments (IHME) – led by Prof Christina Victor, Director – addresses the Brunel University Research Strategy 2030 Health Grand Challenge. Drawing together expertise from across our three colleges and our partnerships with our key community stakeholders, we focus on two priority challenge areas:- disease prevention and enhancing wellbeing and new models of care. -
Institute of Materials and Manufacturing
Institute of Materials and Manufacturing (IMM) – led by Prof Hamid Bahai, Director – Brunel has invested heavily in the development of research capability in materials and manufacturing (including casting/processing and precision/additive manufacturing), and structural integrity (metallic and composite structures and materials). It combines unique expertise and facilities in these areas with predictive numerical modelling, sensors and signal processing. Research involves the integration of all the aspects of structures and materials research, including: modelling and characterisation; design; manufacturing; and exploitation. -
The Experimental Techniques Centre
The Experimental Techniques Centre is home to a range of large and small scale characterisation facilities that are managed by a team of dedicated scientific officers. -
Wolfson Centre for Sustainable Materials Development and Processing
The Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing was established in 1987 as a focus for materials research in Brunel University. Since its inception, the research in the Centre has been based on the development of extrusion and injection-moulding technologies relating to polymer compound formulation, process-induced structuring, nano-composite processing and the processing of metals, ceramics, soft solids and natural materials.
