Mary Oliphant was born on 6 August 1701. She was the daughter of George Oliphant and unknown Young.1 She married James Lyon, 7th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, son of John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Lady Elizabeth Stanhope, on 6 March 1731.1 She died on 7 September 1731 at age 30.1
From 6 March 1731, her married name became Lyon. After her marriage, Mary Oliphant was styled as Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne on 6 March 1731.

He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Stanhope of Shelford, co. Nottingham [E., 1616] on 12 September 1656.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Chesterfield, co. Derby [E., 1628] on 12 September 1656.1 He held the office of Lord Chamberlain to the Queen Consort between 1662 and 1665.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1667 in the Regiment of Foot.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 15 July 1669.1 He held the office of Chief Justice in Eyre, South of Trent between December 1679 and December 1685.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) from 26 January 1680/81 to February 1688/89.1 He was Colonel of the 3rd Foot between 1682 and 1684.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 30 November 1708.1 His last will was dated 17 December 1713.

Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne was born on 29 May 1643.1 He was the son of John Lyon, 2nd Earl of Kinghorne and Lady Elizabeth Maule.1 He married Lady Helen Middleton, daughter of John Middleton, 1st Earl of Middleton and Grizel Durham, on 23 August 1662.1 He died on 15 May 1695 at age 51 at Castle Lyon, ScotlandG.1
He succeeded as the 11th Lord Glamis [S., 1445] on 12 May 1646.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne [S., 1677] on 12 May 1646.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Lyon and Glamis [S., 1606] on 12 May 1646.1 He held the office of Burgess of Dundee in 1660.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant between 1672 and 1680 in the King's Life Guard of Honour.1 On 30 May 1672 he got a regrant of the 1606 creation with a limitation to him and the heirs male of his body, in default of which to any person nominated by him, in default of which to his heirs male whatsoever, in default of which to his heirs and assigns whatsoever.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)
