- Cecil Godfrey Rawling CMG, CIE, DSO (* 16. Februar 1870; † 28. Oktober 1917 nahe Passendale), war ein britischer Soldat im Range eines Brigadier und Entdecker. In den Jahren 1903/04 nahm er an dem Einmarsch britischer Truppen in Tibet unter der Leitung von Francis Younghusband teil und leitete zusammen mit C.H.D. Ryder die von Younghusband unmittelbar anschließend veranlasste Gartok-Expedition. Bei einer Expedition in den Nordwesten Guineas (heute Papua) entdeckte er im Jahr 1909 die , einen bis dahin unbekannten Stamm kleinwüchsiger Menschen. Er war auch der erste, der die Erforschung und Besteigung des Mount Everest plante. Bei der Dritten Flandernschlacht bei Passendale im Ersten Weltkrieg kam Rawling ums Leben. (de)
- Brigadier-General Cecil Godfrey Rawling, CMG CIE DSO FRGS (16 February 1870 – 28 October 1917) was a British soldier, explorer and author whose expeditions to Tibet and Dutch New Guinea brought acclaim from the Royal Geographical Society and awards from the Dutch and Indian governments. He published two books detailing his experiences and served in the British Army on the North-West Frontier of India and in France during the First World War. It was during this latter service that he was killed in action aged 47 during the Battle of Passchendaele. A man of adventure in the Victorian mould, he was said to possess 'true courage, modesty and kindness of heart' whether in the snows of Tibet, the jungles of New Guinea or the muddy trenches of Flanders. His death was widely lamented in the scientific and geographic fields and was covered in The Times, where a friend described 'his patient courage, his resourcefulness and constant cheerfulness' and described how he possessed the 'eternal boyishness of the Elizabethans' in his exploration. In de jaren 1903-1904 nam Rawling deel aan de Britse Veldtocht in Tibet onder leiding van Francis Younghusband. Zijn team onderzocht de uitlopers van de Mount Everest en de bron (Yarlung Tsangpo) van de rivier de Brahmaputra. Rawling schreef over deze tochten The Great Plateau; Being an Account of Exploration in Central Tibet, 1903, and of the Gartock Expedition, 1904-1905 (London, 1905). Als deelnemer van de Expeditie van de British Ornithologist's Union naar Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea, huidig Papoea, ontdekte hij in 1909 de Tapiro, een tot dan onbekende stam van kleine mensen. Over deze expeditie publiceerde hij The Land of the New Guinea Pygmies. An Account of the Story of a Pioneer Journey of Exploration into the Heart of New Guinea (London, 1913). Rawling kwam om het leven in de buurt van Passendale, België, bij de Derde Slag om Ieper tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Hij ligt begraven op The Huts Cemetery in Dikkebus. Rawling werd tijdens zijn leven verschillende malen gedecoreerd, onder meer met de Orde van Sint-Michaël en Sint-George, de Orde van het Indische Keizerrijk en de Orde van Voorname Dienst. (nl)
