Thanks for the protect. He's a high school kid, tried a few hoax articles and didn't get away with it, now playing some other games. My guess is within a few weeks or a month he'll get tired of it and go find some other place to play. Fan1967 21:45, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Noticeboard complaints and CK

I realize you're a busy admin, as most seem to be. But would you be so kind as to stop by and deal with this, or find another impartial admin who could do so. legal threats and a mountain of personal attacks just sitting unchecked does not lead to a positive community. Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#User:CoolKatt_number_99999 and Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#User:CoolKatt_number_99999_part_2 you can see an even further summary of their recent attacks on the RFC you just reverted that they tried to deface. As you can see we've more than made an attempt to reach out to this user and they just continue their behaviour User_talk:CoolKatt_number_99999#Sockpuppetry --Crossmr 22:32, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I appreciate you looking at it, but be aware, that the 9 personal attacks he launched as a result of a pokemon article being put up for AfD were after this RfC was started, so I'm not sure if those incidents will be properly addressed in this RfC. --Crossmr 23:06, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sens over Leafs anywayday though, but for good Vancouverites like me, we have one team, they're called the Vancouver Canucks and they're the best team in the NHL (I hope, after what I paid for tickets :o) -- Tawker 03:21, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good luck, I really do like watching the Sens (when CBC finally decides to show them instead of the Leafs) - if only you could solve your sucking in the playoffs problem. Oh well, there is always next season :) -- Tawker 06:01, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bae Yong Joon

Ever since you unprotected the page, there has been a resurgence of vandalism on this page [1]. However, prior to unprotection, User:Fabshelly has restarted its edits of violating Wikipedia's laws, despite being warned on Talk:Bae Yong Joon about it, and said that I'm vandalisng the page instead. However, his actions are contradicting to the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia:Content disclaimer, Wikipedia:NPOV and etc stated on the talk page.

How can we, correct User:Fabshelly's conception of wikipedia? Do we have to resort to banning him from Wikipedia, like User:Paektu? As an admin, I truly need your guidance, since I'm very poor at dealing such matters. I don't think semi-protecting the article can sufficiently protect against these parties, especially Fabshelly who is a registered user. Perhaps you can see Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-06-25 Bae Yong Joon by Fabshelly to how we can resolve the case---but I will only make the move if he moves first. Anyway, I have posted a defence statement against Fabshelly's allegations against me on Talk:Bae Yong Joon. Mr Tan 12:09, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Request to look over article/talk page

Hi Samir, you're the most recent admin to leave a "if I can help let me know" message on my talk page. I was wondering if you could take a look at Talk:Celtic toe and the article as well, and offer any opinions you might form. -Cheers, Pete.Hurd 20:47, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, yeah things related to Celtic toe have gotten both a bit sillier, and a bit clearer, since I asked you to look into this. Now that the AFD is proceeding I think User:BrittonLaRoche's request to have an admin look at the treatment of his article is kinda moot, but thanks for doing so. Hate speech? I don't know... My Hebrew is poor - but it doesn't look like hate speech... maybe in Canada it is tho :)

Content is approximately as follows:

  • This user opposes radical-left-wing gay organization "Yefe Nefesh" who are trying to kill citizens and residents of Israel, whether ? or ?.
  • This user opposes ? anti-jewish, anti-israeli, and anti-semitic, that ?. He opposes the demonization of the Israeli Defense Force, who are defending ? (the demonizers?).
  • This user believes in the nationalist idea, of all nations and among them Israel. Another nationalist sentence. This user believes in the right of every nation to defend itself from its enemies within and without, and believes that the poor people of one's town take precedence. (that's a reference to biblical charity, I have no idea what it has to do with anything.)
  • This user thinks ? ? ? was fixed at the time of the giving of the torah: "If a man shall lie with a man the way one lies with a woman, it's an abomination, both shall die for they have caused their own demise." (Leviticus).

Note on bottom: he's only referring the the specific organization, and not to all leftwingers or to all homosexuals.

Hate speech? Maybe not, but he has certainly "exhausted the community's patience." I know he has mine. I'm for an indefblock, if anyone's asking for consensus. - CrazyRussian talk/email 12:55, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why. thank you, Doctor! I found out about the nomenclature scheme a couple months ago, and was amazed. I toyed with the idea of writing an article for several weeks actually, but I was busy and wasn't sure if it was too technical for Wikipedia. Ultimately I decided it was just too fascinating and I needed to share it with others. My schedule has lightened a bit so I hope to be around Wikipedia some more these days. Thanks for the comment; I'm really glad you liked the article! — Knowledge Seeker 10:29, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Seems fine to me. I fully understand it (you write with a sophisticated style by the way). I wikilinked a couple words in order to give readers a clearer understanding. I was thinking of writing things in a more simple style (for e.g., from "Endoscopically..." to "When viewed with an endoscope..."), but then I realised that it would probably be verbose. It's good as it stands. Orane (talkcont.) 02:14, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dear Samir(The Scope)

I see that you have removed an addition that was made to Ulcerative Colitis...

There are thousands of studies published on the topic of Ulcerative Colitis. A list of studies published on this topic can be found and discussed Warning: Removed link making page uneditable due to spam filter

Though I do realize that visitors can get the same abstracts via PubMed - I wanted to let you know why the referenced link appears to be better:

1 - The link goes DIRECTLY to a title search for Ulcerative Colitis. As you know, you can not offer a link to pubmed directly with the search term. This is not only an inconvenience, but for those not used to pubmed may be a stopping point. This site pulls the same results as PubMed does. Same data - and it goes there directly.

2 - It certainly seems reasonable to have a link to a listing of all of the recent publications on Ulcerative Colitis within the UC section of Wikipedia - no?

3 - This particular link alows vistors to discuss the literature - a feature that is not possible with PubMed. In this way, if a visitor finds an article of interest but has a question about the study, proposal for f/u study, etc - on the refered to link they might gain an answer. On PubMed they would not.

I will not replace the link - but offer you these thoughts. If you believe the link to be of value, feel free to replace it.

By the way - fun talk page! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IBDrsch (talkcontribs) .

Request for assistance

  • There is a rather extensive debate going on in Talk:University of California, Riverside about whether the page at present shows bias. If you happen to have some time handy, could you weigh in on your opinion? There's some massive wikilawyering going on by two editors who believe the present article is unbiased, and it would be nice to have an admin not involved in the dispute to express their thoughts. Feel free to turn the request down if you don't have the time. Peace :) Danny Lilithborne 07:19, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello Samir. Firstly, again thankyou for your support on the Srikeit RfA - it has passed the century which is pleasing. Thanks for your support over the last few days. I am feeling better now and have started writing again. I made my first trip to New articles Australia for 53 days today (quite shocking isn't it), so it feels good to be back, and with the creation of Boy Charlton (my first DYK nom for 50 days - something's wrong), David Theile and Malcolm Champion, the redlinks on Australian Olympic medalists in Swimming are now gone (after 7 months and 90+ articles). Regarding University of California, Riverside article

Hello, Dr. Samir. I noticed that you had deleted the segment of the sentence from the above article that reads: with one respondent calling the university 'an abomination to higher education'" I realize that Danny Lilithborne had asked you to look at the article, and even though you mentioned that you weren't at all familiar with the university, you still chose to delete the line because you felt: "one student can say anything about a university; cite details of the importance of this one quote in the news media." Would you be so kind as to elaborate further on this? That is, there is a long discussion in the TALK page under "abomination quote revisited" and I don't want to undermine that debate by someone independently asking an admin to make a unilateral decision (because this action is not an approved part of the steps of mediation). I was also wondering if you knew that an RFCA has already been done, and it confirmed that I am NOT the same person as Insert-Belltower, yet Danny Llithborne keeps accusing us of such (and I keep trying to get him to stop). And lastly, I was wondering if you knew that an Request for Arbitration was also filed against me, and it was rejected by four of your fellow admins. The admin's opinions about the article were all positive, calling it a "pretty decent college article." Another wrote that my points of view were significant, etc. I know that when a user appeals to you for help, you want to help, but there's another side of the story. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. UCRGrad 13:18, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

your talk Archive 6

Samir: While I was on RC patrol tonight, someone at this IP address, User:72.67.28.135, tried to edit your talk Archive 6. All he/she did was change a couple of pronouns from he to she at the section titled Bae Yong Joon. I'm assuming you know why; I saw the warning you left at his talk page, and I put one right underneath it.

Before hitting yours, he did the same thing to a similarly-titled section at User talk:David.Mestel, which I also reverted. Just wanted to give you a heads up, if you are in fact going to take the problem to a bureaucrat. Good luck - Baseball,Baby! ballsstrikes 08:47, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The new and third article on Legionnaires' disease

I am writing you for two reasons. One, I would like your opinion as a physician. Two, you once nominated an article I wrote, Flue gas stacks, for DYK.

Wikipedia has had two existing articles for quite a while named Legionella and Legionellosis. About a month ago, User:Noigel2000 started making changes to both these articles with no prior discussion on the talk pages. When his changes got edited, he became quite perturbed. After quite a bit of discourse, (during which his need to use proper Wiki syntax and guidelines was pointed out to him), he became even more perturbed. He made a number of derogatory remarks about other editors and about Wikipedia, and kept insisting that his Internet website (devoted to Legionnaires' disease) was the best source of such information and better than anything in Wikipedia.

Finally, Noigel got tired of having his edits to the two existing articles corrected and of being admonished for some of his remarks. So he wrote a third, completely new article entitled Legionnaires' disease. It is composed entirely of material taken directly from the many pages on his Internet web site. He made absolutely no attempt to "Wikify" the article. There are no references, no external links (with one exception, a link to his web site), no embedded Wiki links, poor organization, no use of Wiki section headings, etc. In my opinion, he is using Wikipedia as a billboard for his web site (and I admit that I am biased, because I do not like his attitude).

Please look at these two pages on his website: [4] and [5]

Here is a direct copy of his self-introduction from his User talk:Noigel2000 page: "Who am I or what am I. Some call me a Legioneela Advocate, Others a Legionella Nut or Legionella Fan some stronger than that."

Do you think that this third article by Noigel is really needed? Are not the two existing articles more than adequate? Please let me know what you think. - mbeychok 21:37, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

One thing i dont need a billboard for my sites 1-10 on all search engines

I was still working on the page, but had to stop because of other urgent problems that have come up

One thing im not thats a cry baby mbeychok fight my own battles

But just to make you happy, this is whats going on

I am organising a world wide petition with all the leading experts of legionella with hope your federal government will change its mind for the closing of this valuable lab with me luck i will return

Protection

Hi, Samir. I was wondering if you'd consider removing the semi-protection on your talk page. I think that talk pages should be rarely if ever protected, only in the face of continual vandalism that blocking cannot thwart. And if user talk pages must be protected, I think it should be on the order of hours, not weeks. Especially if you're actively editing and reverting vandals and such, your page really should be available for others to contact you. — Knowledge Seeker 03:42, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

My RfA

First of all, thanks for your comment. Since you expressed regret as to how the RfA turned out, perhaps you could clarify your vote for me. You said you thought I had responded to criticism poorly. Well, the criticisms I mainly responded to were not criticisms of my behavior that would be relevant to my behavior as an admin (the criticisms of my user page content, for example, were relevant; I didn't really respond to those criticisms), but criticisms of my preference for maintaining a gender-neutral identity. I consider those comments to fall outside of the bounds of what is acceptable in civil discourse on Wikipedia. It's as if a number of people were citing the fact that I have brown hair as a disqualifying factor. Perhaps there are better and worse ways to respond in either case, but should an editor be judged on how they respond to comments that should never have been made in the first place? I'm trying to figure out what (if anything) to do about this, so any response on your part would be helpful (though if you'd rather not explain, that's fine). User:01001 & Human height

Hey Samir, I was wondering if you could look at User talk:01001's edits to Human height. This user recently had a bunch of OR edits to Human height reverted [6], whereupon he (nine minutes later) deleted a paragraph [7] explaining on the talk page that "it is OR" [8] because he felt that a study cited in the paragraph (published in American Journal of Epidemiology) did not accurately support the statement being made. I restored the four sentence paragraph, with a bit of rewrite, and added two more published papers (each sentence in the section now supported by a seperate reference), and he reverted again, deleting the entire section [9] with the complaint that the one reference was off the point. He clearly hasn't read the text he reverted. He's reverted again [10] with the edit summary that "This section distorts the meaning of the study. See talk." (talk diff) the talk justification seems like a total non-sequitor. (The last sentence of the paragraph is silly, but other than that I just can't wrap my mind around any reason that the article in question would require the whole paragraph be deleted). I've since replaced the reference he's griping about with with another. Can you look into this? Is there some explanation for this editors behaviour that I'm missing?

Note that this user seems to be grinding an axe about OR (with regards to Talk:Fox News Channel controversies), on Wikipedia talk:No original research and elsewhere, I get the feeling that some bee-in-bonnet is coming out as a WP:POINT against this paragraph about height.

DYK

Was wondering if you could provide feedback on why the John Warfield Johnston article didn't get picked? It was never contested and when I realized it had expired I asked for feedback since it was my first time, but no one replied... I know you guys are busy, but was just hoping for some tips it being my first nom? This isn't meant as a criticism, I'm wanting to learn and improve future DYKs... Thanks! plange 05:28, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP:CLINMED

Thanks for the invite to WP:CLINMED - the Medicine portal does not include eyes or feature Ophthalmology as a speciality! That is indeed strange considering that Ophthalmology encompasses a tremendous amount of medicine, besides surgical procedures. Eye complaints and their management is a very common medically managed issue. Being an eye specialist, I feel that it deserves inclusion in the portal and envisage a much wider role for portal as a whole for physicians and surgeons. Excluding other surgical specialities also is, IMO, not desirable. Could you kindly take steps to ensure such an inclusion. EyeMD 06:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

AfD

Samir, I'm in need of the opinion of someone from India on an AfD I've become involved in (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pradip Somasundaran). I've expressed my opinion regarding his notability (that he's not), but I feel we could use the mature, rational opinion of somenody from the region (if only by birth). If you do have time, I would love it if you came by and checked it out.

Just bringing an admin in here

Samir, if you get the chance could you keep an eye on User:Lucas Richards. As you can see on his Talk page, he's been accusing me of vandalism and generally going against WP:NPA. He's received his final warning from me now and I fully expect that he will respond with another personal attack, so I thought it was time to bring someone in who had the teeth that I don't on a matter like this. There's a link on his talk page, too, to a sockpuppetry case, so it may ultimately need to be keeping an eye on two accounts. If you're too busy, then can you refer me to another admin? I'm asking you purely because you're the most recent admin I had any dealings with. Cheers. BigHaz 22:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wow! That wasn't quite what I was expecting! Still, I did ask for "teeth", didn't I? Out of curiosity, does the "sockpuppeteer" get blocked as well, or just the sock? BigHaz 07:57, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

DYK

I apologize for reverting your changes to the template inadvertantly and for the terseness of my edit summary. The image resolution looked fine to me, and I find the image more interesting than a portrait (of which we've had many on DYK). Might I suggest that, in the future, if you disagree with the choice of a DYK image after 6 hours, that you update the entire template if you have time. -- Samir धर्म 01:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

At higher resolutions (such as mine) the sign's text was too small to be legible. When selecting thumbnails for the main page, it generally is best to avoid images that contain important text.
Also, please remember to protect the image, and don't assume that an image is still protected because it was featured earlier.
Unfortunately, I haven't had nearly as much available time for Wikipedia as I would like. —David Levy 19:08, 1 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jgwlaw

Hi Tyrenius. In the context of the new article James J. Shapiro, I think it would be fair to unblock User:Jgwlaw so she can participate in discussion on it. If her behaviour continues to be inappropriate, the threshold for restoring the block would of course be at your discretion. Many thanks -- Samir धर्म 02:24, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi Samir, personally I consider her previous behaviour and her subsequent behaviour since the block has forfeited her right for the time being for editor privileges, as there is every sign that they would continue to be abused, so I am not lifting the block. I consider from my discussions with the article creator User:WAS 4.250 that he has been scrupulous in wishing to apply NPOV encyclopedic standards and that Jgwlaw's response would be from an unrelenting POV that any attempt to biog Shapiro is in fact part of some wiki campaign of "lawyer bashing". However, I have no objection to you or Pilotguy (see his talk page) removing the block, provided you are prepared to deal with the consequences. Thanks for asking. :) I knew the article was being rewritten, but had no idea it was going to be uploaded, by the way. Tyrenius 02:44, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Crohn's Disease page

Your user page said it was OK to leave a comment about medical content on your talk page.

I was reading the Crohn's disease page and this sentence is under "Diet and Lifestyle":

"Because the terminal ileum is the most common site of involvement and is the site for vitamin B12 absorption, it is generally advised that patients receive bi-weekly or monthly intramuscular vitamin B12 injections."

I think that it is overstating the need for supplemental B12, to say "it is generally advised" makes it sound like all patients should get it as part of their care plan, when in reality only the patients who are found to be B12 deficient will need it (and some of those will respond to po supplementation and not need IM.)

Probably more accurate to say:

"Because the terminal ileum is the most common site of involvement and is the site for vitamin B12 absorption, patients with Crohn's disease are at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency and may need supplementation."

Hi, Samir. Just wondering what the procedure usually is after a checkuser is run and verified sockpuppets are found. I think it would be appropriate to mark User:Raven Symone with a sockpuppet tag and possibly either User:Cute 1 4 u or User:Gemini531. But then, Cute14u seems to be more used, while Gemini531 is an older account. Any thoughts? I'm just trying to learn some of the procedure when something like this comes up. Dear Samir.
I am afraid that you have been misguided by User EyeMD. He seems to be hating me in the real world and is spreading worng information about me. First he said that there are no books like that. When I dared him to contact the publisher and verify, he has changed the stand. I request you to kindly go into all the details and then cast your opinion. What is the definition of Cram Books. ANd even ifyou say cram books are different, where is the Wikipedia guideline that says Exam Cram books are NOT books. Even if so, there are less notable biographies with less known books. WHy is User EyeMD not deleting then, but is going around all user talk discussions and asking my biography to be deleted. I have proved as to why the biography satisfies Wikipedia Criteria. THen he has changed the reason to vanity. Any one can see that I am involved in the article for the past 3 days only. Now few guys are going around the net and spreading wrong information about meDoctor Bruno 01:11, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Upset

YOu should note that I am not upset because the article is going to be deleted. (I deleted myself). I am upset for different reason given at the end. But as far as I am concerned, as per the current norms which is given in the pages dealing with notability I am notable.

What is worrying me is the fact that users give a hasty judgement and then try to search reasons to justify that and in that process (of justification) slander me. If you see the whole arguments, you will see that I have been able to substantiate my points far better than those opposing it

To summarise, let us see what the Guidelines say

1. Notability of Books. THe books have an ISBN Number. 5 books are published by reputed firms. 4 of those are published by the biggest medical publisher in India. In such a case, one user who gave a knee jerk comment in the first place has choosen the 6th (1 out of 6 minority) and say that it is self publishable. He has ignored 5 because his ego prevents him from going back on his earlier words

Notability (people) 1. Published authors - 6 books is more than enough to satisfy this criteria

Notability (doctor) May be there is nothing called as exam preparation in western world, but here it is a budding field. I did not give these links it that page as it will amount to "self-glory", but since you seem to understand, I am giving you few links. You can search at www.rxpgonline.com [11] www.aippg.net/forum[12] and www.netmedicos.com [13] You may think me of some one obsessed with self glory, but the point to prove is that, unless some one is regarded as an expert in that area, you will not see students from the length and breath of a country with 1000 million population to ask for my help

Then

Regarding the counter points

1. The article was not written by me. When this controversy erupted, I read the guidelines regarding autobiography and has followed what is given in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:AUTO#If_Wikipedia_already_has_an_article_about_you Even without going through the debate, when users accuse of vanity (as if I have created the article) it hurts a lot

2. WP:BIO clearly says that you can have articles on published authors. There is no talk about Junior/Senior, Undergraduation/Post Graduation, Fiction/Nonfiction etc.

My main concern is that all these points come out only after I put a counter question. They are not the real facts or standing norms, but are made up as the users ego prevent them from stepping back and change the hasty initial judgement. In order to substantiate the hasty vote, they invent their own new guidelines and terms like junior doctor, exam shelf life, not finished PG etc . Wounded by these new "self invented" guidelines, I even deleted the article my self, but that has been restoredDoctor Bruno 07:36, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I understand

Dear Samir Thanks for the message. Now I understand that even though my books have been published, I still fall short of the notability criteria as the books are not "textboks" or well known (throughout the world) If some one had said this on day one, it would have been nice. Instead, I had comments like Junior doctor/no post graduation/ limited shelf life etc that made be irritated. Thanks for your patienceDoctor Bruno 00:23, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
