"Taisen" means "great war" in Japanese. I believe it was his dharma name. U.b.i.k. 03:53, 17 September 2006 (UTC) U.b.i.k.[reply]

Correction: there are different kanji that can be used to spell the name "Taisen". The kanji as shown in the Japanese version of Wikipedia reveal that his name means "calm hermit".U.b.i.k. 03:30, 18 September 2006 (UTC)U.b.i.k.[reply]

Yes, "calm hermit" or "calm deva is correct.—Nat Krause(Talk!) 22:08, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Souces disagree on whether Deshimaru received Shiho from Sawaki. The AZI web site doesn't mention it in their bio.U.b.i.k. 20:18, 17 September 2006 (UTC)U.b.i.k.[reply]

The Shiho on the death-bed is a myth. In Soto-Zen, Shiho is always accompanied by the writing of several documents that are signed by students and teacher, and a ceremony. Even the followers of Deshimaru don't claim that this took place. What they say is that Deshimaru received the Dharma "mind to mind" from Sawaki. But that has nothing to do with Shiho. (Zafu)

War years

I have removed the story about Deshimaru being sent to jail because of being to nice to local people and westerners there. It seems very unlikely because : -no reference to prove it, - He had quite close followers in France that now have build a kind of cult of Deshimaru. None of them makes any reference to this story.

BTW, other facets of Deshimaru are not presented in this page and should be in order to draw an objective portrait, e.g. children out of wedlock, excessive consomption if alcohol, friendship with right extremist Sasagawa.
