Your monobook.js currently contains some JavaScript errors. Anything of the form <!-- START TWINKLE --> needs to be changed to either // START TWINKLE (if the comment is on a single line) or /* START TWINKLE */ (if the comment spans multiple lines). For instance,

<!-- importScript('User:Gracenotes/amelvand.js'); -->

should be

// importScript('User:Gracenotes/amelvand.js');

. Cheers, mc10 (t/c) 03:25, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, for Twinkle, you should remove the following lines:
if( typeof( TwinkleConfig ) == 'undefined' ) TwinkleConfig = {}; // DO NOT REMOVE THIS LINE - ALL TWINKLE SETTINGS AFTER THIS
TwinkleConfig.markAIVReportAsMinor = false;
TwinkleConfig.markSockReportAsMinor = false;
TwinkleConfig.markUAAReportAsMinor = false;
TwinkleConfig.markRevertedPagesAsMinor = [];
TwinkleConfig.watchWarnings = false;
TwinkleConfig.watchRevertedPages = [];
TwinkleConfig.watchSpeedyPages = [];
TwinkleConfig.openTalkPage = [];
TwinkleConfig.showSharedIPNotice = false;
TwinkleConfig.summaryAd = '  '
Twinkle is now customized through Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences, not through the JavaScript file directly. Cheers, mc10 (t/c) 03:27, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I'm a little outdated, am I? Well, thanks for optimizing my monobook.js! I've made the necessary changes. Goodvac (talk) 04:33, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Also, remove the Friendly lines as well:
// START FRIENDLY
importScript('User:Ioeth/friendly.js');
if( typeof( FriendlyConfig ) == 'undefined' ) FriendlyConfig = {}; // DO NOT REMOVE THIS LINE - ALL FRIENDLY SETTINGS AFTER THIS
FriendlyConfig.watchTaggedPages    = false;
FriendlyConfig.watchWelcomes = false;
FriendlyConfig.enableClock = false;
// END FRIENDLY
Friendly has been incorporated into Twinkle; you edit all settings at Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences. Cheers, mc10 (t/c) 04:53, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CSD declines

[edit]

I've noticed you've removed a few CSD tags that suggested deletion under the A7 criteria. I just wanted to give you a heads up on a couple of things. The A7 criteria does not correlate to notability, but is reflective of a lack of significance and/or importance specifically presented in the article. Remember that significance is separate and distinct from verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 01:18, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Cindy, for the note. "Significance" is another way to say "asserts notability" ("the subject is notable/significant"). I remove A7 tags when I see reliable sources (in the article or from my searches) that directly discuss the subject, implying passage of the GNG. That said, I recognize that A7 concerns significance presented in the text, but I prefer to take a broader look and see if it meets the GNG or an SNG so as to discourage an AfD or a PROD. If it doesn't meet the GNG or an SNG, I note this (for example, [1]) in case the tagger wishes to pursue deletion. Goodvac (talk) 01:40, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see that you probably got here through this edit. I didn't notice that you had commented on the talk page. However, I think that one notable artist releasing something under the label is enough for A7. Goodvac (talk) 01:46, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hey there! I wouldn't have normally commented, but the deletion policy specifically rules out any correlation between significance and notability. You can review the policy here. The A7 CSD is considered the most commonly misunderstood speedy deletion criteria. The assertion of significance is not in correlation to references, unless they indicate notability in accordance with the general notability guidelines. At the same time, an article may be sourced, yet still fail to indicate significance or importance, meeting the A7 criteria for deletion. Regarding the removal of A7 tags (when you see reliable sources that imply meeting the GNG), I honestly don't see consistency in the removal. Tags have been accurately removed, where the article clearly met the A7 deletion policy. And at the same time, while you correctly declined the A7 on the Simon Westlund article, you suggested deletion through another process for a subject recognized on an international basis, receiving awards as the best in his field, presented in the se.wiki, and for which independent and reliable sources are readily available. As far as record labels, notability is not established for a label, based on roster or recordings. Record labels are organizations, which require established notability through significant coverage in reliable, secondary sources. (BTW: Launchpad Records does not include any notable artists signed to their label.) That said, while I regularly monitor deletion nominations, I didn't place the A7 CSD and I don't fault you for declining the A7, it was essentially a judgement call that you are clearly free to make. Know that this is not a desire to diminish your work, but to offer assistance where policies and guidelines have been misapplied. I honestly, just wanted to offer some help. Accept it or reject it. It's up to you. We are currently working with students presenting their work online and accordingly, it is essential that we at least attempt to address inconsistencies and noncompliance when able. Again, if you have questions, please feel free to ask. If you would like counsel regarding anything I've mentioned here, you might consider posting a question to the discussion page of the CSD policy. Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 05:18, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't get me wrong—I'm glad you started this conversation, just putting my thoughts out there.
    Tags have been accurately removed, where the article clearly met the A7 deletion policy. So are you saying that if the article does not assert significance but sources are found to meet the GNG, the article should be deleted? If substantial sources are available, there ought to be an effort to save the article. Some articles don't assert notability but if one searches for sources and finds that the subject meets the GNG, should A7 deletion be carried out nevertheless?
    I agree—I have been inconsistent in my edit summaries. I intend to write "A7 does not apply" when the tag is incorrect and "remove speedy" when I have found sources that help pass the GNG (for example, [2]).
    With regard to Simon Westlund, yes, there are sources available to verify his championship, but I am not willing to make a judgement call as to whether that meets WP:ANYBIO.

Standard2211 (talk) 00:49, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your effort to work on the article, but it looks like most of the changes you made are to format rather than to content. It's still blatant advertisement. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 18:53, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I removed some puffery in those edits. What exactly do you find blatantly non-neutral in the article? Here's what I found:
  • Lead — all fact.
  • "Personal life and faith" — "special appreciation for the people of Israel and have caused him to spearhead many ministries in support of Jews and Israel"
  • "Journalist" — all fact.
  • "Speaker" — "widely sought-after speaker", "broad perspectives ... are widely valued and deeply cherished"
  • "The ten Boom Fellowship" — all fact
  • "Jerusalem Prayer Team" — all fact
  • "Honors" — all fact
  • "Author" — "great peril of the Jewish people"
  • "Documentary producer" — "EIM is a California-based 501(c) 3 non-profit organization describing itself as dedicated to quality family-oriented programming in all facets of communication."
  • "Filmography" — "Jewish struggle for freedom and statehood and the forces that threaten her stability"
That's all I can see that can be construed as promotional or non-neutral. Even so, these examples do not warrant outright deletion of the article. G11 is only for articles that are "exclusively promotional, and would need to be fundamentally rewritten". That doesn't qualify here. As much as I dislike using maintenance tags, I think the best option here is to tag it with {{peacock}} or {{npov}}. Goodvac (talk) 19:41, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Speaker section has hyperbole problems other than the ones you named; there appears to be a general issue with implicitly crediting Evans for things that other people did, such as having Sharansky released or interviewing Ahmadinejad; the promotional nature of the ten Boom and JPT sections. OTOH, most of this isn't sourced anyway; probably the solution is to gut the page. BLP (and V) requires that stuff be cited, and the fact that this is positive material doesn't change that. And what is sourced is cited to self-published stuff, which is not how one goes about writing an article; one reflects coverage in reliable sources, and then uses SPS to fill anything necessary in. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 20:19, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point. As you said, there are serious problems with the article (poor sourcing and BLP), but I still don't believe G11 is the applicable CSD. Feel free to tag the page again per G11, and we'll see what the reviewing admin thinks. Best, Goodvac (talk) 20:27, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I gutted most of it, so unless the same PR users that created the page pop back in and restore the advert material, we should be fine. Feel free to take out more, too. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 20:37, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would have completely reduced it to a well-sourced stub, but it's fine to leave a skeleton there. I'll take a look tomorrow (short on time now) and see what else can be done. Goodvac (talk) 23:55, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, I don't see any more puffery, so I think it's fine for now. Goodvac (talk) 05:02, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, thanks, and a couple of questions.

[edit]

Hello Goodvac. Thank you for reaching out to me and being a source of contact. I came across a page that I did not create, but was of interest to me, and was being considered for deletion. The page was poorly written so I have been editing it. My first question: Is it possible for me to get a more advanced editor to look at the work I have done on a page in order to get feedback related to the quality of my work? My second question: How long does the debate process go on before a final decision is rendered in regard to the fate/outcome of a page? Thank you for your time and attention. Therebelking (talk) 22:47, 31 December 2011 (UTC)Therebelking[reply]

No problem, Therebelking. I am glad that you are interested in improving articles up for deletion. The process in which you are participating at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Savage Sun is called articles for deletion (AfD). It usually lasts seven days; if few people have commented at the AfD, there will be a relist to allow for more opinions. One critique about your comment at the AfD: although you pointed to a specific guideline (WP:BAND), you did not provide evidence in the form of links, which are crucial at AfD. You wrote that Savage Sun "has been the subject of multiple ... reliable sources". Provide links to these sources so other participants can reconsider their position if necessary.
Finally, for assistance from experienced editors, you can post here or place {{helpme}} on your talk page with your request for feedback. If no one answers your request by next week, I'll probably check the article and perhaps offer an opinion at the AfD. Goodvac (talk) 03:18, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Concordia

[edit]

Hello my friend, I am sorry for the delay in replying to your question. Although things have now moved on and it is clear what the ship's track was for her last hour or so, yes, my information came partly from that publication, but also from the AIS data which showed her track (although the last AIS info I saw had her on a heading of (from memory) 010 degrees and a speed of just over a knot.) Also a look at the available charts of the area clearly shows the reef we are talking about. Further, the pictures (stills & video) showed her where she currently is and a lot of confusion may have occurred because of her orientation, as well as the gash on her port quarter. The VDR will confirm this, but I expect that she was turning to starboard (away from the shore) at the time of impact. Anyway, greetings to you. Best wishes, --Rich0908 (talk) 18:05, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give me a specific aspect of the countries that you want the entry for? The entire entry is just too big, and the site doesn't have a function to collate all the different pages into one page. Goodvac (talk) 19:29, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I try to improve the Timeline of the introduction of television in countries (my draft in the German WP, where I use the Europa World Year Book from 2008) by adding references to it, so I need the "Broadcasting and Communications" chapter, which usually includes the year the first TV station was founded or at least the name of it. I also need Dominica, the 2008 book did contain Information about the broadcast media there--Antemister (talk) 20:10, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The page hierarchy is: South Sudan / Directory: Society and Media / Broadcasting and Communications / Broadcasting / Television / South Sudan TV. On "South Sudan TV", it has:

"Arop Bagat Tingloth" links to a page that has:

South Sudan TV
Juba

For the Solomon Islands, the page hierarchy is: Solomon Islands / Directory: Society and Media / Broadcasting and Communications / Broadcasting / Radio / Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation. At the last page, it has:

Sure, if you don't mind that would be great. I'm trying to get this up to Featured Article quality and ensuring that it is a "thorough... survey of the relevant literature" is quite a challenge for an obscure subject like this. Some sources I have found don't have Rosenberg's first name, and I found that searching for his last name along with the King's name helpful. Mark Arsten (talk) 18:34, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Finding information about Rosenberg is a challenge indeed. This is the little that I found, but the information may be redundant to what you already have in the article.
Page 10 (Honolulu, Volume 1, Issue 5)

How the Torah Scroll got to Honolulu and how it came into the possession of King David Kalakaua is still a mystery. Hawaiian oldtimers give three different explanations.

The most romantic version claims that the Torah belonged to a certain Elijah Abraham Rosenberg, who landed in Honolulu in 1887 from a whaling ship. "Rosey," as he was called, said he was a rabbi but this is doubtful. He was, however, known to be a man of some Jewish scholarship whose skill in magic and a bent for telling tall stories endeared him to King Kalakaua. "Rosey" seems to have won the monarch's affection by reading his horoscope and amusing him with Bible tales and aphorisms. Although Rosenberg is supposed to have arrived aboard a whaling vessel, tradition has it that among his belongings was a Torah Scroll, the significance of which he is said to have explained to Kalakaua. Before vanishing about 1889 as suddenly as he had come, Rosenberg presented the Torah Scroll to the King, and, so the story goes, even taught him some Hebrew and the rudiments of Judaism. Few put much stock in the "Rosey" story. Most authorities are inclined to accept another version of the origin of the Torah Scroll which involves a certain Rabbi Kline from the United States who stopped in Hawaii en route ...

Page 18 (Honolulu, Volume 1, Issue 5)

Today there are some 1,000 Jews in Hawaii, few of whom ever heard of the royal Torah Scroll. Yet in the worship services in Temple Emanu-El the Torah pointer, which Princess Li- liuokalani could not explain, is still in use.

In 1959 a member of the Temple presented the pointer to the Temple, explaining it had been given to her by one of the surviving royal princesses. It is a sterling silver filagree, with the design of an arm in ancient priestly garb. A jeweler estimated the intrinsic value of the pointer, including a few cheap stones set in the middle set in the middle, as worth less than $100, but historically it is of great value because it is inscribed in Hebrew with the name of Elijah Abraham Rosenberg, the mysterious "Rosey," and states plainly that "this is the pointer contributed by Elijah Abraham Rosenberg in the year 5645" (Hebrew year for 1885).

Page 170 (American Jewish landmarks: a travel guide and history, Volume 4)

In January, 1887, a Jew by the name of Elias Abraham Rosenberg, a self-styled rabbi, arrived in Honolulu and ingratiated himself with King David Kalakaua by his chanting and so-called occult powers. He soon became the king's soothsayer and astrologer and acquired such power over the monarch that the Hawaiian press bitterly attacked him and denounced him as a "Holy Moses." After Rosenberg had taught the king some Hebrew, he persuaded the king to appoint him appraiser of customs.

The royal magician was given quarters in the Iolani Palace in Honolulu where he practiced magic and chanted Bible stories in Hebrew. Soon after Rosenberg won the King's favor, a revolution limited much of Kalakaua's power and marked the swift end of Rosenberg's career. Before Rosenberg sailed back to San Francisco in June, 1887, he received from the King an inscribed silver cup, a gold medal, and $260.

The Torah Rosenberg had brought with him was left with the King, together with a handsome silver Torah pointer (yad). It has been suggested that the two Judaica articles were left behind as security for the $260, which may have been a loan to enable Rosenberg to leave the islands quickly.

Enjoy! Goodvac (talk) 20:19, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Goodvac (talk) 21:18, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I really think this article is too problematic to be restored, even though he is arguably notable. I appreciate that you have attempted to salvage what is, after all, an apparent autobiography (see initial editor), but
  • is a New Zealand photographer whose pictures examine the strange anthropology of cities around the world. Working and living between Auckland and Paris his practice investigates the nature of reality and the relationship between parallel lives... His work deals with the democracy of non-places in the knowledge that nothing is as it seems. — I find it difficult to see in what sense this is encyclopaedic, factual, and neutral, rather than a publicity blurb.
  • The lack of any personal information, even city of birth, DoB etc, suggests the intention is to publicise what he's done, rather than tell us anything about him.
  • I appreciate that you have added references, but because they are not in-line, it makes it difficult to see what parts of the factual text (books, exhibitions etc) each is verifying
  • Photo education is an important part... — pov posing as fact.
  • I'm astonished that you think that a section headed Praise, laden with unsourced quotes (names given, no actual sources), is acceptable. It's obvious self-promotion. Where is the Negative criticism section?
  • The article was created in a single edit without wikilinks or references, and looks as if was copied from an unknown and possibly copyrighted source.
If you really think it's worth trying to get this to be more that a vanity page for its original creator, let me know and I'll sandbox it for you to work on. I just think it has too many problems to just be restored and tweaked a bit, All the best Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:09, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that we should be ascribing motives to article creators and deleting pages based on them, however manifest those motives are. All that matters is the quality of the article. I admit, the article had parts that were POV-laden, but POV ≠ promotion, so outright deletion was unnecessary. As for the section header "Praise", that was my mistake—it was odd to have a list of quotes floating at the bottom of the article, but I couldn't think of a suitable header.
Nevertheless, please userfy the article for me and I'll rewrite it with reliable sources and check back with you when I'm done. Thanks for the thorough explanation though. Goodvac (talk) 07:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we even have a filter that automatically flags up autobiographies/coi, so I don't think it's just me. Anyway, the guy seems to meet the notability criteria, so you should be able to salvage something. Text shortly here Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:39, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks! Goodvac (talk) 06:43, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've made a tweak where what is obviously a subjective opinion was presented as fact, otherwise looks much better than before. I think it's ready to be moved to article space, good luck Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:01, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for observing at WP:HD that the problems with colors not changing for visited ELs is a Monobook issue. I've since switched (temporarily) to my backup account, which has a different skin, and all is fine. Nyttend backup (talk) 04:04, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, no problem! You could have just changed to another skin on your original account when you're doing work with external links, so you don't have to use an alternate account. Anyhow, in case you haven't noticed, a bug has been filed by TheDJ (talk · contribs), though I'm not sure when a fix will be deployed. Cheers, Goodvac (talk) 04:14, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to have to bother with changing lots of settings (or having things show up months from now that I didn't expect to happen) on the main account, so I figured the alternate would work better. I'm over 80% done on the EL-related project anyway. Nyttend backup (talk) 01:50, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that's great. Goodvac (talk) 02:08, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sprinkles.

[edit]

Goodvac, you're killing me. Why the double-standard? Whoever created the Sprinkles Wiki entry makes claims only substantiated by erroneous media reports in local daily papers, not by top-notch culinary researchers or experts. The articles sited are NOT written about thorough investigation of which bakeries are cupcake-only. The mentions, if/where they exist are asides.

However, that Sprinkles is cupcakes-only is more than implied, articles or not. Cupcake Royale exists down the street from me. Yes, they will make you a beverage out of coffee beans. Otherwise, all they do is CUPCAKES. That's it. And, that's why people come to them. It's very well known, from NPR to the NY Times. I just can't find a sentence for the dense amongst us that say "Cupcake Royale is a cupcake only bakery. Want a photo? How else would you like this substantiated? Maybe I can grab a crappy blogger's quote that says Cupcake Royale is indeed Cupcakes Only. Maybe one can be made up, posted and then referenced.

See what I'm saying? Let's be smarter.

Until someone contests Cupcake Royale's existence as a cupcakes-only bakery, I think it absurd that we question it as being so when there's zero hard evidence that Sprinkles had no predecessor. In fact, there's plenty of evidence to the contrary but Sprinkles gains fame, notoriety and economic benefit from claiming they're the first. C'mon!

So, want a PICTURE of their bakery/bakeries? A quote from the owner????

Thanks.Xtiang (talk) 20:44, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Double standard for what? I wrote the Sprinkles Cupcakes entry, and all the sources are reliable and sufficiently support the cited text. "[T]op-notch culinary researchers or experts" are not necessary.
I question it because I have seen multiple sources, listed on your talk page, that state explicitly that Sprinkles was the first. If "there's plenty of evidence to the contrary" and Cupcake Royale is "very well known, from NPR to the NY Times", then there must be reliable sources you can bring to the table. Wikipedia article rely on reliable sources, not original research. Goodvac (talk) 22:06, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

[edit]

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:18, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Riley Schillaci AfD & barnstar

[edit]

Hi mate, thought I'd post something after the resolution of the Riley Schillaci AfD discussion. While I am personally annoyed that the process has effectively "rewarded" some pretty disgraceful conflict of interest and sock-puppetry from the subject of the article, I think the outcome was (nonetheless) the right one. The fact that you were willing to stick to your guns and remain civil and courteous (where others would have given up or become hostile) is a credit to you. Dear Goodvac, Thanks for your patient tutelage with my sign-in issue. My problem was that I was not reading the boxes right on my email sign-in. It had said "new email address" and it had not occurred to me that I could type in something there because the box to the right of it contained my Wiki user name--it wasn't blank. So I thought it was a box for my user name. It didn't occur to me to type my new email address over top of it, until I read your recommendation that I try this. Bottom line and good news: I did type in my new email overtop of my user name, AND IT WORKED. Now all I have to do is figure out how to register for the news database which was my purpose for registering an email. Thanks again! EMP (talk) 22:59, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So I added verifiable information on Tyler to the "Emmett Jay Scott" article and created a link from the Tyler article to the Scott article. Is this all I need to do?
