DYK for Verna Mersereau

[edit]

On 28 October 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Verna Mersereau, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that American stage actress Verna Mersereau performed her traditional classical dances before royalty in Calcutta? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Verna Mersereau. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Verna Mersereau), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

user:Spiralwidget maintenance instructions are not comments and should not be formatted as such. Whcih prose is not formal? FloridaArmy (talk) 15:52, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Firstly, Carr is repeated twice in the second paragraph. There is no infobox, which I think is important for Carr. Thirdly, the last paragraph repeats information (Carr's first wife died) and information out of place about Ralph. Would really like more information about her as well because as it is this could just be a redirect to Ralph's article. I think I have judged harshly in retrospect- the redirect section is poor prose, but the rest of the article is formatted well, so I apologize for the hasty review. Make the changes and resubmit when ready. Spiralwidget (talk) 16:05, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note, @Spiralwidget, drafts do not need infoboxes in order to be accepted. Make sure you don't use a lack of infobox as a reason to decline a draft.
@FloridaArmy continually adds the requests for re-directs as the top line of drafts, I've gotten used to it and so just remove the line on acceptance.
Being that Eleanor was a state legislator she meets WP:NPOLITICIAN automatically so I would have accepted this and just tidied up the language and removed the top line. Qcne (talk) 16:48, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello FloridaArmy,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Victor Huot (cartographer) for deletion, because it's a redirect from an article title to a namespace that's not for articles.

If you don't want Victor Huot (cartographer) to be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

To answer your question, per MOS everything in the lede and infobox is supposed to be included and sourced in the body of the article. The lede (opening section) is there for people who do not want to read the full article. I realize that this duplication does not make much sense in a Stub or Start class article, but it does make sense the longer an article gets. Rublamb (talk) 02:54, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In my very humble opinion repeating the birthdate isn't useful when we give it up front. I think what's included in the intro should be covered in the body, not repeated. Birthdate is also in the infobox?
I posted some entries I need help with on the North Carolina wikiproject talk page and Draft:High School of Charleston in South Carolina was just deleted if any of those subjects interest you. Do we state when schools were established in the opening and again in the history section? Oh me oh my.. FloridaArmy (talk) 03:12, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I never used to repeat the birthdate in the Early Life section. However, all of my GA reviewers maintained that it is correct to do so. In addition, the lede is not supposed to have sources; the exception being for a quote. As a result, there would not be a source for the dates if this content was not included in the main body of the article. I am not going to look for a good example, but the lede of a FA is typically longer than a start or even a C class article, making an article's first sentence and the Early Life section pretty distant and not viewable at the same time on most screens.
With regards to schools, I would not worry about it for stubs or start class articles. However, it is correct to include that info in both the summary/lede and the history section, especially as the article expands into sections. Here is an example of a FA for a college: Pomona College, and a couple of GA for collges: Briarcliff College and East Carolina University.
I am currenlty working on a big WP cleanup project that has uncovered a bunch of sub-par aticles. I took a break from that and have added five or six biographies, but need to get back to that project. I also have a list of nearly 100 redlinked academies and colleges that I am working on. I thought I would get though the list quickly by creating stubs but keep getting distracted by finding lots of sources and/or notable founders who also needed articles. There is just not enough time! Rublamb (talk) 03:45, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for your thoughtful reply! Makes sense. If birthdates are in the infobox that would be a place where they could be cited. Thanks for all your great work! Definitely not enough hours in the day. I am going to check your userpage to see if I can see the list of academies in stub and redlinked form. I find that each entry I work on is a can of worms with a dozen other notable subjects related that are completely missing or inadequate at present. FloridaArmy (talk) 16:14, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I personally hate the clutter of citations in the infobox. Although infobox citations are an option, MOS says infobox content should come from the article. A bit of a mixed message. I tend to go with what I know with pass GA.
The most current version of my list is here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities/Redlinked institutions, with others adding details and suggestions. It is linked through the Redlinked Institutions tab of Wikipedia:WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities. I also just created an Articles for Creations page and tab where we can drop missing fraternal groups and people associated with those groups (or people linked to the redlinked schools). We previously had these hidden within our watchlist. I mostly work on minority groups and early women's professional groups as they were and continue to be excluded/underrepresented in traditional publications and directories. Of course, digging into those often identifies notable people. Previously, we were not collecting those names, so they were just a redlink if I didn't stop and create the article.
You are, of course, welcome to help with any of this or to suggest other articles. Rublamb (talk) 17:28, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

== Draft topics assistance request ==

Hello, I noticed your recent posts about North Carolina project articles, your active dedication to improving WP, as well as some connection to Florida in your name. I have a couple of 2/3rds complete work-in-progress drafts in various Sandboxes that are not complete due to me being away for a bit (a rewrite for NC Mountain, A 2nd rewrite, or expansion for, or a new article for FL-origin music genre). They are getting stale without more progress and in some cases may need another opinion or formal process. I am back to WP but I'm not sure how much time and effort that I'll be able to devote on expanding, narrowing, or completing or moving them. If you are willing to take a peek and have any ideas, advice, or time available to work on them, please alert me. Thank you Johnvr4 (talk) 15:15, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:Johnvr4 I am always happy to help where I can! Please list the articles with wikilinks so I can take a look or point in the right direction to find them. FloridaArmy (talk) 16:10, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!

::I tried a complete rewrite for Cold Mountain (North Carolina) since it is/was a mess but lost my mojo and let it sit over some nonsense on that Talk page.

It's not any type of actual problem but could be a hassle for me if I ignored it. I was going to Rfc it but have to wonder is it's really worth it... the current state of the Cold Mountain draft is here: User:Johnvr4/sandbox18
The other one in its current state is at User:Johnvr4/sandbox52. It does not have a good title. It's along the lines of Beacham_Theatre covering the Electronic music scene in Orlando, Florida breaks (which I've rewritten once before and is a messy again), or Orlando sound, and was Orlando's Summer of Love-(so probably not that). I'm sorry. I believe that I accidentally clicked on and left my comment on a different talk page than the one I had intended to. Johnvr4 (talk) 18:51, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
