Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *sreŋ, *sreŋs) : semantic 鼠 (“mouse; rat”) + phonetic 生 (OC *sʰleːŋ, *sreŋs).
Etymology
[edit]STEDT reconstructs Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-(l/r)e(y/ŋ) (“squirrel, weasel”). Cognates include:
- insides Chinese, 狸 (OC *rɯ) (however, see there for other etymologies);
- outsides Chinese, Tibetan སྲེ་མོང (sre mong, “weasel”), Burmese ရှဉ့် (hrany., “squirrel”), Lepcha [script needed] (să-myóŋ, “marmot”), Karbi [Term?] (iŋren, “mongoose”) (< *m-ren) (see also Schuessler, 2009), Proto-Karen *hliᴮ - whence S'gaw Karen [script needed] (liɁ⁴⁵lu¹¹¨) (Northern) & [script needed] (li⁴⁵’) (Southern) - all meaning "squirrel", etc.
