Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声) : semantic (person) + phonetic (OC *dɯɡ). The character originally conveyed the meaning of "to stand upright." Associated with the character 直, it meant "to hit" or "to be correct," and by extension, it came to mean "value" or "worth."[1]
