How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Photos

edit

Hi. Dear Platonides, why you deleted all photos and pictures ? We have already solved the problem. We have a slightly different law. I have already indicated this in other places. There were talks about this, and from the copyright agency they explained to your (official) admins how it should be. The main source is indicated and no one changes the photo. especially since it's open source. Please return the photos. Otherwise, I'll have to complain. In Azerbaijan, the laws do not work like you do. With us, the author is the photographed person himself or the photographer directly receives permission from the person. If he does not agree, then he is not the author. In the open access of the Internet, photos are in the public domain, especially if the photo is posted on a news site, they are protected by copyright only when a person in absentia applies to a copyright agency and registers this item. Otherwise, everything is not as you think. AzeWEB (talk) 00:40, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Álbum fotográfico del instituto

edit

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Prova d’existència

edit

Platonides (talk) 00:38, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Update

edit

Could you update this page for me? Thank you. DS (talk) 19:44, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sure, DragonflySixtyseven. I had this a bit neglected. I have preparing a script to perform the whole process. It's on it right now. Platonides (talk) 02:04, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Very kind, thank you. DS (talk) 03:25, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I think these paintings are worth undeletion for further research. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:30, 1 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I just thought "you can't be serious"... We have hundreds of thousands of those artworks that are not in the PD in the US but everywhere else on the Commons, and nobody has really cared ever (especially if from minor, obscure artists that had and have nothing to do with the US). Please undelete them again. --Anvilaquarius (talk) 14:03, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

"Nobody will care about our copyright infringement" has never been our policy in Commons (or in Wikipedia), Anvilaquarius! See Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle if you never encountered that. Wikimedia Commons policy is that the PD work must be in Public Domain both in the U.S. and the country of origin of the work, see Commons:Licensing#Interaction_of_US_and_non-US_copyright_law.
There was a proposal a number of years ago that would have allowed this, but it was ultimately rejected, see Commons:Review of Precautionary principle for the long discussion.
I'm open to restore images that are in Public Domain in the US and the origin country, or to temporary undelete them if you are going to find sources for their publication date (or, failing that, the creation year is likely also the publication year). But we must follow our policies (which you may try to change if needed).
Alternatively, I would be glad if you managed to make the US follow the rule of the shorter term, as it would immensely solve all these kinds of issues.

¡Hola!, estaba leyendo el intercambio postal y me parece que si ella misma es parte de los herederos o sucesores legales, no le veo inconveniente la restauración con el número de VRT enlazado. Saludos Superzerocool (talk) 12:33, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't know when this was painted. Painter lived from 1873 to 1953, and the style suggests Post-Impressionism but I am not an art historian so I can't say if it's PD in the US or not. Abzeronow (talk) 20:37, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category discussion warning

Category:Flickr_images_by_miguel.discart_needing_human_review has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

De-adminship warning

edit

Dear Platonides, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2024 by 12 September 2024, 23:59:59 UTC, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months, if you fail to do so you will automatically lose your admin rights along with any other advanced rights.

You can read the current de-admin policy here.

Bot errors

edit

About that extremely useful page you generated for me a while back - your bot has started updating it wrong. It's deleting large quantities of content that should still be on the list.

Could you do something about that? Thanks. DS (talk) 15:51, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

That's very strange. I haven't changed the script processing the dump since 27 November of 2022. So, if it's not that we have already fixed almost everything, I can only think that it was an old bug that only now has surfaced due to some content (but I don't see how could that happen) or that the commons dumps are broken. Can you provide an example of a page that should be listed (ie. broken Creator template as of last month) but is not being included? Platonides (talk) 17:44, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello User:DragonflySixtyseven
It took me a while to figure this out, since dealing with a 961 GB file isn't particularly fast, and I needed several iterations. It turns out that the mediawiki dump format has changed.
Before, it had a format like:
::  <page>
:: <title>File:Madonna and Child and Little Saint John MET ap21.159.2.jpg</title>
::    <ns>6</ns>
::    <id>57365867</id>
::    <revision>
::      <id>618691006</id>
::      <parentid>613059924</parentid>
::      <timestamp>2022-01-02T23:29:35Z</timestamp>
::      <contributor>
::        <username>BotMultichillT</username>
::        <id>344180</id>
::      </contributor>
::      <comment>/* wbeditentity-update:0| */ Adding structured data: main subject</comment>
::      <origin>554024064</origin>
::      <model>wikitext</model>
::      <format>text/x-wiki</format>
::      <text bytes="4859" sha1="thf7q6ta7j1dr633varhbnlqfno5j6z" xml:space="preserve">=={{int:filedesc}}==
::{{Artwork
:: |artist             = {{Creator:Gilbert Stuart|Robert Loftin Newman}}
:: |author             =
::(...)
::      </text>
::   </revision>
::  </page>
::
My code just reads this, and when reaching the </page> tag processes the contents of <text>...</text>
However, it turns out they have added mediainfo to the dumps, so now it actually contains:
::  <page>
:: <title>File:Madonna and Child and Little Saint John MET ap21.159.2.jpg</title>
::    <ns>6</ns>
::    <id>57365867</id>
::    <revision>

::      <parentid>613059924</parentid>
::      <timestamp>2022-01-02T23:29:35Z</timestamp>
::      <contributor>
::        <username>BotMultichillT</username>
::        <id>344180</id>
::      </contributor>
::      <comment>/* wbeditentity-update:0| */ Adding structured data: main subject</comment>

::{{Artwork
:: |artist             = {{Creator:Gilbert Stuart|Robert Loftin Newman}}

::(...)
::[[Category:Paintings of Madonna and Child in the Metropolitan Museum of Art]]
::[[Category:Department of American Paintings and Sculpture, Metropolitan Museum of Art]]</text>
::      <content>
::        <role>mediainfo</role>
::        <origin>618691006</origin>
::        <model>wikibase-mediainfo</model>
::        <format>application/json</format>
:: <text bytes="4490" sha1="lw232qblugm8f4ltl0ct7tx295jmhy0" xml:space="preserve">{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;mediainfo&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:&quot;M57365867&quot;,&quot;labels&quot;:{&quot;en&quot;:{&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;,&quot;value&quot;:&quot;Madonna and Child and Little Saint John - painting by Robert Loftin Newman, after Gilbert Stuart (MET, 21.159.2)&quot;}},&quot;descriptions&quot;:[],&quot;statements&quot;:{&quot;P180&quot; (...)</text>
::      </content>
::      <sha1>9kwyvtrnkauzeg48him33vdkomlg3mf</sha1>
::    </revision>
::  </page>
::
My bot was thus processing that last <text> tag, not the one which is a direct child of revision. And it was not finding any wrong Creator template in them.
Platonides (talk) 12:27, 15 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it is fixed now. I am reprocessing commonswiki-20240820-pages-articles.xml.bz2, will later tackle commonswiki-20240901-pages-articles.xml.bz2 Platonides (talk) 13:17, 15 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
961 GB is all the metadata on Commons, yeah? DS (talk) 13:25, 15 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's the size of the uncompressed commonswiki-20240820-pages-articles dump. That contains only the last revision of each page, and skips e.g. User and talk pages. It's described as "Articles, templates, media/file descriptions, and primary meta-pages" Platonides (talk) 23:50, 15 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

DR for the Spiderman shirt

edit

Hi. I was wondering if you'd be willing to look over and close Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Estrellato since they are similar and you seem to have experience in the area. In that case some of the costumes are clearly de minimis but a lot aren't or its borderline. So it would be worth looking through the individual images to determine which are worth keeping or not. I think the DR has been open long enough for someone to make a decision about it either way though. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 01:25, 16 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
