Guest studies

General Information on Guest Studies and Courses for Senior Citizens

Anyone who wants to further their education in individual fields of knowledge without earning course certificates, passing examinations or completing a degree can become a guest student at the University of Bamberg. The prerequisite for attending courses is the general higher education entry qualification (e.g. Abitur) or secondary education (Mittlere Reife).

There are different kinds of courses:

In a Lecture (Vorlesung, abbr. V), an instructor gives a lecture, often in conjunction with a discussion or an opportunity to ask questions.

The Practical Training Course (Übung, abbr. Ü) gives the opportunity to solve mostly practical tasks that fit the content of a lecture.

The Seminar (S; PS: intermediate seminar; HS: advanced seminar; BS: block seminar) offers an intensive examination of the topic through debate, discussion and participation. Here, students usually give presentations, an obligation that does not apply to guest students, however.

In addition, there are colloquia (K), tutorials (T), revision courses (R), as well as practical language training (SA), field trips/courses (E) and study groups (AG). The abbreviation for other courses is ‘SL’.

Which courses are open to guest students?

You will find all courses available to guest students in the course catalogue for guest students in UnivIS under the heading Gaststudierendenverzeichnis.

All courses listed in the directory for guest students are open to this group. Guest students can attend the lectures marked as suitable for guest students.

Please note that for seminars and practical training courses, the number of participants may be limited; if so, students have priority. Furthermore, special requirements (previous knowledge, previous examinations etc.) may prevent guest students from attending the course. It may therefore be helpful to contact the instructor before the first day of the course.

The course catalogue shows day of week and time, e.g. Mo 14 - 16.

This means, the course takes place every Monday in

summer semester 2024 from April 23, 2025 until July 25, 2025

Course length usually is 90 minutes, unless specific time is stated (e.g. 10:30 – 12:00).

Abbreviations of the rooms shown in the course catalogue are listed here.

For example, if it says room U5/00.24, this course will take place in the building An der Universität 5 (U5), ground floor (00), room 24 (/24).

You can enrol as a guest student for the summer semester 2025 from March 10, 2025 until March 28, 2025
