Publishing Model

Articles published in Nature Protocols can only be published using the subscription publication route; we do not offer an immediate gold open access (OA) publication option.

Nature Protocols only publishes non-primary articles  (such as Protocol, Review and Perspective articles). In contrast to primary articles (that is, research articles), non-primary articles do not include original (previously unpublished) research findings and may only contain minimal re-analyses of published data. See aims and scope for more info.

Six months after the date of online publication, authors of articles published in Nature Protocols journals can self-archive the accepted manuscript on their own personal website and/or in their funder or institutional repositories. By agreeing to write for Nature Protocols, authors agree to accept our standard licensing terms including our self-archiving policies. Those standard licensing terms supersede any other terms that the author or any third party may assert apply to any version of the manuscript.

Finding articles

Our articles can be accessed by searching or browsing the site. Each week, the Editors highlight a featured protocol, which is made freely available for one week. Readers can receive a monthly email alert by signing up for our e-toc. We invite researchers to comment on our articles and encourage you to follow our Nature Community Guidelines. All authors of articles and comments must agree to adhere to our terms and conditions.

protocols.io

Nature Protocols is associated with protocols.io, an open repository for protocols, which is completely free to use for authors (no article-processing fee) and readers (no subscription fee). Authors upload protocols, which can then be assigned a DOI for citation purposes and published under a CC-BY licence. They are not peer-reviewed or edited. Protocols can be linked to any publications in which they are used. protocols.io acts as a preprint server for protocols and sharing your protocols does not preclude publication in Nature Protocols should you wish to submit at a later date. Together Nature Protocols and protocols.io form an invaluable interactive resource for researchers.
