Hal

From Transformers Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search
Hal is an Autobird from the Angry Birds Transformers continuity family.

"This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it."

Hal is as easy-going as they come. He enjoys a life of solitude, strumming mellow tunes on his banjo. Though he has little interest in conflict, he is not one to stand idly by when he sees someone in peril. However, when he becomes upgraded into Grimlock Bird by the EggSpark, he receives a complete personality overhaul to go along with his robotic body. In this new form, Grimlock Bird is aggressive, foul-tempered, selfish and... somewhat dim-witted. He also begins peppering his speech with "Me Grimlock Bird" with aggravating frequency. All of this comes in exchange for a brutal increase in physical strength and a devastating fire-breath attack. Grimlock Bird is all too happy to use both of these against the Deceptihogs and anything else that threatens either the Flock or their eggs.

ABTF2-GrimlockBirdGardener.jpg
Hal was happily playing his banjo by his lonesome when the three Blues came upon him. The three little birds informed him that they were planning on stopping the Bad Piggies on their own, prompting Hal to join them out of a sense of responsibility. When they came upon King Pig and his minions, they were startled by Starscream Pig zipping past them. Hiding behind a bush, Hal warned the Blues that something big was going down, and sent them off to fetch the rest of the Flock. As the Blues flew off, Hal witnessed the rest of the Bad Piggies touch the EggSpark to upgrade themselves into Deceptihogs. Chuck was the first bird to rejoin Hal. But the yellow bird came in too fast, knocking both himself and Hal into the EggSpark, and transforming them into Bumblebee Bird and Grimlock Bird respectively. Grimlock Bird's transformation changed his personality completely; no longer the laid-back easygoing bird he once was, he now hungered for combat and violence. He managed to push Bumblebee Bird out of the way after the Deceptihogs sent forth their first attack volley, and then became enraged that the pigs had attempted to hurt his friend.
ABTF1 GrimlockBird vehiclemode.jpg
Transforming and unleashing a torrent of flame, he sent the Deceptihogs fleeing, though only after causing the Flock's eggs to be exposed the the EggSpark's energies. Angry Birds Transformers #1 The rest of the Flock then came upon the two Autobirds. A display of Grimlock Bird's newfound short temper greatly upset the Blues. Grimlock Bird informed the trio that he believed that any bird incapable of transforming was "useless." To make his point, he transformed into... a sort of "wheelbarrow mode." The Blues were unimpressed, stating that a motorcycle form would be much more useful. Grimlock Bird lost his temper once more, stating that he was still getting the hang of transforming. He then ran off to take care of the Deceptihogs on his own.
ABTF2 GrimlockBird standstill.jpg
Following the pigs' tracks, he came upon the tower that his quarry was hiding in. He burst in, trampling Soundwave Pig and headbutting Galvatron Pig in the process. He was then knocked out by a bump on the noggin', courtesy of Lockdown Pig. Age of Eggstinction! By the time Grimlock Bird regained consciousness, the Autobirds and Deceptihogs had joined forces in order to combat an even greater threat; the Eggbots, running wild all over Piggy Island. He tackled this new foe with renewed vigor. The Autobirds' and the Deceptihogs' alliance was a shaky one however. Optimus Prime Bird and Megatron Pig were soon arguing with one another on the battlefield. Grimlock Bird agreed with Bumblebee Bird that the argument was an entertaining one. Once cooler heads prevailed, the fight against the Eggbots began anew. Revenge of the Fowlin'! But the EggSpark's influence on Piggy Island began to spiral out of control, forcing the Autobirds to change objectives once more. In order to restore normalcy to Piggy Island, they had to separate the artifact from the land itself.
ABTF4 Halbanjo.jpg
Grimlock Bird was put in charge of keeping the volatile Galvatron Pig restrained while the pigs and the birds made a desperate dash towards the EggSpark's location. At a crucial juncture, Galvatron Pig broke free of his bonds and knocked Grimlock Bird aside. Things got even more complicated when Starscream Pig seized the EggSpark for himself, intending to use its power for his own selfish goals. Grimlock Bird teamed up with Soundwave Pig to take out Galvatron Pig, while Bumblebee Bird managed to launch both Starscream Pig and the EggSpark off-planet. The island and its inhabitants then reverted to their original forms. Hal had no memory of his time as Grimlock Bird, and was baffled when the other birds informed him of how he had acted. He then entertained Terence, Bubbles and Bomb with some tunes from his banjo. Hard Boiled

As Grey Slam Grimlock

(thumbnail)
Me Grimlock love smashing Pigs
  • Squad: Leaders
  • Mission Type: Firepower
  • Unlock Type: New Area (1000 pigs) TelePod

This first of the Grimlock variants to unlock, Grey Slam Grimlock actually used to be just Grimlock, but in Deceptihogs' Revenge he was changed- presumably to look more like his movie look. Grimlock is strong, brave, and effective at smashing and crashing, as well as loud and violent. He may not like authority, leaders and taking orders (despite being in the Leaders squad? And Leader of what? There's no other Dinobots in the game) but he'll always come through for his friends. Grey Slam Grimlock gives Terence a stroll for his money in the slowness department. Even in cycle mode, Grimlock is a slowpoke. But like Terence, he's heavily armored, and his firepower is intimidating. His weapon is an electric-breath blast that strikes its target instantly (unless something gets in the way), making it very effective for taking out missiles. The blast will persist until the target is destroyed or you choose a new target. However, if Grimlock keeps exhaling electricity for too long, he'll overheat, leaving him without a weapon for a few seconds. Watch for the targeter to glow red, a warning that you should lay off the laser. A mix of precision blasts and sweeping strikes can devastate towers in short order.

The candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long. Energon Grimlock has a pretty dang good turn of speed compared to the other versions, and his electric breath is absolutely devastating in its power in comparison, able to take out Walking Mortar Towers with relative ease. Unfortunately, he also overheats much faster than the others, requiring more frequent breaks between blasts, otherwise he's left defenseless for several seconds. If he attacks again immediately after his weapon cools down, he is only capable of a very short-duration burst, needing a few more seconds to recharge for a longer blast.

As with all Energon variants, he takes extra damage from enemy attacks, but can heal damage in levels by absorbing energon cubes from de-cyberformed scenery.

ME GRIMLOCK LOVE COINS
  • Squad: Variant Versions
  • Mission Type: Firepower
  • Unlock Type: New Area (2000 2800 pigs) TelePod
Goldbite Grimlock packs a lot of raw power into his frame. He's still slow as frick, but he's stronger and better-armored than Grey Slam. Also, his breath can actually push blocks and pigs off their towers. Yowza.
As an "Ultimate" Variant Version character, Goldbite Grimmers gets an additional 100% Coin bonus at the end of any level. Combined with his slow speed giving you ample time to eliminate every block, Pig and missile in your path (even more missiles at 30 Coins a whack since they fire at timed intervals regardless of character speed), an extra 100% Coin bonus for a complete Squad (Goldbite is the final member of that squad to unlock), then doubling all of that by watching an ad, you can really rack up a huge Coin score, potentially earning tens of thousands of Coins in a single run... especially if you add Goldbrick or Goldslam into the mix. Buuuuuuuut, if Goldbite fails a level, he gets no Coins whatsoever.

As Trypticon

(thumbnail)
He once was an Autobird who believe his lack of size was due to not being a Combiner, but then he saw what happened to Omega Supreme...
  • Squad: The Cybertronians
  • Mission Type: Firepower
  • Unlock Type: Challenge Event Prize (10000 tokens)

Trypticon (which very loosely means "Oops. I just accidentally stepped on that." in Latin) is louder, hungrier, stompier and hungrier than the Autobird he was redecoed from, but not bigger like you'd think, probably due to the hunger.

His weapon is a hybrid between the Grimlocks and the Megatrons. He spits out black holes continuously until his weapon overheats, thanks to hunger. The holes aren't nearly as strong as the Megatrons, but the sheer number makes up for that. Despite what you may be lead to believe, him turning into vehicle mode does not generate earthquakes, despite his rumbly stomach.

Trypticon came stomping in in the late April 2017 event "Ultimate Weapon" at an even higher 10000 token cost. But in addition to the recent increased tokens in challenges, this competition awarded more tokens to a wider bracket of players, so it was not that ludicrous. Unfortunately, the other new characters that followed went back to the old leaderboard scoring.

Trypticon's IAP bundle set the newest inflated trend for new character bundles, containing the new character, 550-600 gems, 6000 Spark, and one unique accessory for around $35.

So that's what he's the leader of
  • Squad: Gestalt
  • Mission Type: Firepower
  • Unlock Type: Challenge Event Prize (10000 tokens), Gem purchase (750)

The last original Combiner to be added to the game (and probably the worst too), Volcanicus is, with all due respect, nothing to write home about. First of all, he does not have a special ability in place of his absent vehicle mode. His weapon is a combination of Grimlock's and Novastar's of all people, firing a rather ineffective golden instant-hit beam as the primary weapon and slow, spiraling and flaming bubbles as the secondary, the latter of which does most of the damage. The slow nature of his weapons and absence of decent protective options cause Volcanicus to take considerably large amounts of damage before he can properly return the gift of pain and destruction himself. Hardly a fraction of the fearsome brutality that the OG Volcanicus stands for.

Angry Birds Transformers

ABTF-toy GrimlockEnTelepod.jpg
  • Energon Racers Pack (Telepods Racers multi-pack, 2014)
    • Accessories: Telepods base
As a Telepod figure, Energon Grimlock Bird automatically transforms from dino-vehicle-thing to robot by pushing back his noggin, and back just by pushing him down. He has a scan-code on the bottom of his feet, which allows him to be scanned into the Angry Birds Transformers app when placed on top of a magnifying Telepods base, included with the set. Doing so repairs in-game Energon Grimlock's damage, and powers him up for a short amount of time.
He was only available as part of a multi-pack with "Energon" versions of Optimus Prime Bird, Lockdown Pig, Soundwave Pig, and Starscream Pig.

  • Gray Slam Grimlock Bird (Telepods Racer, 2015)
    • Accessories: Telepods base
Part of the "Deceptihogs' Revenge" wave of individual Telepods figures, Grey Slam Grimlock is a redeco of the Energon version based vaguely on the in-game variant of the character.

  • Bumblebee Bird Blast (Game set, 2014)
    • Accessories: Telepods base
This set includes TelePod figurines for High Octane Bumblebee and Goldbite Grimlock. The accessory included is a massive Bumblebee which, when a character in vehicle mode drives into it, they pop out from vehicle mode.

ABTF-toy Grimlock Jenga.jpg
  • Optimus Prime Attack Game (Jenga game set, 2014)
This Jenga set is centered around a large "Grimlock Bird" frame, with blocks stacked (loosely) inside the tummy section. Players then use the included "slingshot" launcher and ramp to propel their Autobird or Deceptihog of choice into the frame to knock out as many blocks as possible, as well as the included Starscream and Stinger Pigs, meant to sit in small gaps in the blocks.
This set also included vehicle bodies for Optimus Prime Bird and Galvatron Pig, each with detachable soft-plastic heads for use with the actual slingshot portion of the launcher, or other launchers and vehicles in the toyline.
It also included a code on a slip of paper that could be used to unlock "Jenga mode" in the app for free, but eventually the ability to use a code to unlock it was removed, making it a feature you had to pay $15 to unlock, which is absolutely not worth the money.

  • Trypticon Bird (Telepods Racer)
    • Accessories: Telepods base
A TelePod based on Trypticon, which was only shown in concept as there was never an actual Trypticon Bird TelePod ever made. It’s unknown if it was going to be a part of the Turbo Energon line, or a new one entirely.
Your bargaining posture is highly dubious.

Notes

ABTF-TFTM.jpg
  • Hal is one of the 'protagonists' of the Angry Birds franchise.
  • Hal-as-Grimlock is quite different from the original Grimlock in the sense that he is constantly in Dino-mode, sprouting wheels from his legs and chest cavity when switching to vehicle mode.
    • There is however a piece of promotional art, among other things used as the cover for the game's soundtrack, in which Grimlock is depicted as a humanoid body with the known and loved Hal perched on top as the head.
  • With the debut of Trypticon, Hal became the first member of the Flock to become a Deceptihog! Though Nemesis Prime and Airachnid are evil clones, they were still at least classified as Autobirds.
    • Zeta would be the second member to be a Deceptihog, but that makes a lot more sense.
  • Hal-as-Volcanicus' design is based on his Earth Wars design, another Transformers mobile game.
