Grendon Warren
WARYN DE GRENDON held this manor after the Lacies, in the reign of Henry III., and served as Sheriff with Walter de Lacy, from 1218 to 1220. (Duncumb ii.,118.) The family continued to hold Grendon until the latter part of the fourteenth century, soon after which date it appears to have been purchased by the Blounts. James Blount. the first member of the family settled at Grendon, was third son of Sir Walter Blount, by Donna Sancha de Ayala, a Spanish lady of high birth and great wealth, whom he married about the year 1373. The manor of Grendon continued with his direct descendants until the death of James Blount, s.p., 1555, (Inc. p.m. I & 2 Ph. & M.) when it passed by will to his cousin, Roger Blount, (second son of Thomas Blount, Capt. under Lord Mountjoy) whose eldest son, Richard, had issue, two daughters, by whom the estate was sold. (MS. notes by Dr. Blount.) Its next possessor seems to have been Henry Coningsby. He d. in 1636, leaving Grendon to his son, Bennet, whose eldest son, Thomas Coningsby, was father of George Coningsbv, D.D., Rector of Pencombe, &c., at whose death, in 1766, it went by will to his kinsman, Coningsby Harris of Worcester. He conveyed it to his relative, Roger Hope Elletson, whose wife brought it in marriage to James, last Duke of Chandos, by whom it was sold to the Barnebys of Brockhampton. It has been lately purchased by Mr. Wood of Stafford.
