Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien was born on 2 October 1814 at Ashlyn's Hall, Great Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.2 He was the son of James Smith and Mary Isabella Pechell.2 He married Mary Ann Drever, daughter of Thomas Drever and Mary Anne Dorrien, on 9 February 1845.2 He died in 1879.2
He was given the name of Robert Algernon Smith at birth.2 He gained the rank of Captain in the 3rd Light Dragoons and 16th Lancers.1 He was Colonel of the Hertfordshire Militia.1 In 1845 his name was legally changed to Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien by Royal Licence.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 He lived at Haresfoot, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England.1

James Smith was born on 3 September 1768.2 He was the son of Samuel Smith and Elizabeth Watson.2 He married, firstly, Frances Arbuthnot, daughter of John Arbuthnot and Anne Stone, on 4 July 1799.2 He married, secondly, Mary Isabella Pechell, daughter of Augustus Pechell and Sarah Drake, on 23 December 1803.2 He died on 16 February 1843 at age 74.2
