- Smoke (Smoke Jazz & Supper Club) ist ein Jazzclub in New York City, an den das Musiklabel Smoke Sessions abgeschlossen ist. Der Smoke Jazz & Supper Club befindet sich am Broadway in Upper West Side von Manhattan (2751 Broadway, New York, NY 10025). Er wurde 1999 in den Räumlichkeiten der vormaligen Augie's Jazz Bar (1976–98) gegründet. Paul Auster, der häufig Gast im Augie's war, hatte das Drehbuch für den Spielfilm Smoke (1995) geschrieben; die neuen Besitzer Paul Stache and Frank J. Christopher benannten ihren neuen Club daher Smoke. Sieben Abende die Woche finden in dem Club Konzerte mit bekannten Gruppen (jeweils drei Sets) statt; am späten Abend gibt es zusätzlich ein weiteres Konzert mit lokalen Bands (oder eine Session), für das kein Eintritt bezahlt werden muss. Sonntags gibt es ein Brunch-Konzert. Ab 2000 entstanden dort Konzertmitschnitte u. a. von David Berkman, Freddie Bryant, Jimmy Cobb, Wayne Escoffery, Harold Mabern (Right On Time, 2013), Jeremy Pelt; weitere Aufnahmen, u. a. von Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Farnsworth, Louis Hayes, Javon Jackson, Eric Reed, Eddie Henderson, Peter Bernstein (What Comes Next, 2020) oder Harold Maberns Studioalbum To Love and Be Loved erschienen auf dem Club-eigenen Label Smoke Sessions Records. - The Smoke were an English pop group from York. They consisted of Mick Rowley (lead vocals), Mal Luker (lead guitar), John "Zeke" Lund (bass) and Geoff Gill (drums and compositor). The band originally performed around Yorkshire as The Moonshots, changing their name to The Shots when they moved to London. There were two bands playing R&B and other cover versions, one called Tony Adams and the Viceroys, which included John 'Zeke' Lund on bass, Mal Luker on lead guitar and Geoff Gill on drums. The other band was The Moonshots, which included Mick Rowley on lead vocals and Phil Peacock on rhythm guitar (born Philip Peacock, 7 June 1946, Newcastle, Northumbria). These bands then came together to form The Shots and made a single for Columbia, "Keep A Hold Of What You've Got", which flopped. At some point, Peacock left the band, and they then changed their name to The Smoke. The Smoke's biggest hit was "My Friend Jack" (German Chart: No. 2, UK Singles Chart: No. 45); the BBC banned airplay of the song over its then alleged, though highly apparent, drug references. Later singles released under the band name often had variations on the remaining trio of Lund, Luker and Gill, performing along with session musicians to pad out the sound. All failed to sell in any numbers. Guitarist Lund later became a sound engineer for Boney M., who recorded a cover version of "My Friend Jack". The Smoke’s demo recording of Nirvana's "Girl in the Park" opens Secret Theatre, a 1995 Nirvana rarities album. (en)
