- James Bigglesworth, nicknamed "Biggles", is a fictional pilot and adventurer, the title character and hero of the Biggles series of adventure books, written for young readers by W. E. Johns (1893–1968). Biggles made his first appearance in the story The White Fokker, published in the first issue of Popular Flying magazine and again as part of the first collection of Biggles stories, The Camels Are Coming (both 1932). Johns continued to write "Biggles books" until his death in 1968. The series eventually included nearly a hundred volumes – novels as well as short story collections – most of the latter with a common setting and time. The chronology of the canon, spanning both world wars, set up certain inconsistencies over the unavoidable ageing of Biggles and his friends. Also later editions had to be somewhat edited in line with changing norms of acceptability, especially regarding racism, and in view of the pre-teenage readership who increasingly favoured both the books and the comics. - Biggles est un personnage de romans, créé par William Earl Johns. La série touche plusieurs genres populaire : le récit de guerre, le roman d'aventures et les romans policier et d'espionnage. Ses aventures ont été adaptées en bande dessinée 60 ans après sa création, et au cinéma en 1986 en un film homonyme. C'est un aviateur apparu pour la première fois dans le récit The White Fokker, publié dans le premier numéro de Popular Flying magazine. La première collection des histoires de Biggles, The Camels are coming, a été publiée en 1932. Under mellankrigstiden åtar han sig privata uppdrag som pilot. När andra världskriget bryter ut tjänstgör han återigen som stridsflygare. Efter kriget arbetar han för Scotland Yard. Bigglesböckerna beskriver en enkönad värld; när en flicka förekom i en bok fick författaren massor av ilskna brev från läsare, som hotade med att sluta köpa böckerna, om inte "fåniga flickor" försvann ur dem (enligt Alla tiders bokserie, sid. 163). Det finns dock undantag - i första världskrigets slutskede förälskar sig Biggles i den vackra Marie Janis, som dock visade sig vara en tysk spion. (sv)
