Use Writing Tools with Apple Intelligence on Mac
With Apple Intelligence,* you can use Writing Tools to proofread your work, create different versions of the same text to help you find the right wording and tone, summarize selected text, and compose content from scratch. Writing Tools are available in most places you write, including third-party apps and websites.
Note: Apple Intelligence is available in macOS 15.1 or later on Mac models with M1 or later. To check whether Apple Intelligence is available for your device and language, see the Apple Support article Apple Intelligence requirements.
Proofread text
Select the text you want to refine, Control-click the selected text, choose Writing Tools, then click Show Writing Tools.
Tip: In some apps—like Notes and Mail—you can open Writing Tools by holding the pointer over the selected text, then clicking , or by clicking in the toolbar.
Click Proofread.
Apple Intelligence checks your text for grammatical and spelling errors. All changes are underlined with a glowing line.
Do any of the following:
Switch between the updated and original versions of your text: Click .
View changes and an explanation for each change: Click and .
Revert to the unedited version of your text: Click Revert.
When you’re finished, click Done.
Rewrite text
With Writing Tools, you can rewrite text you’ve just written—like class notes or a blog post—to ensure everything reads just right. You can also adjust the tone of your writing to suit the audience and task at hand.
Select the text you want to refine, Control-click the selected text, choose Writing Tools, then click Show Writing Tools.
Tip: In some apps—like Notes and Mail—you can open Writing Tools by holding the pointer over the selected text, then clicking , or by clicking in the toolbar.
Do any of the following:
Rewrite text: Click Rewrite.
Rewrite the text in a particular tone: Click Friendly, Professional, or Concise.
Rewrite the text based on a description: Click “Describe your change,” then enter a description—“Turn this into a poem” or “Make this more enthusiastic,” for example.
A rewritten version of your text appears.
Do any of the following:
Try the rewrite again: Click .
Switch between the updated and original versions of your text: Click .
Undo a change: Click to show the previous change.
Revert to the unedited version of your text: Click Revert.
When you’re finished, click Done.
Summarize and organize text
After writing or reading text, you can use Apple Intelligence to generate a summary. You can also have the summary presented as bulleted key points, or have the original text organized in a list or in a table.
Select the text you want to refine, Control-click the selected text, choose Writing Tools, then click Show Writing Tools.
Tip: In some apps—like Notes and Mail—you can open Writing Tools by holding the pointer over the selected text, then clicking , or by clicking in the toolbar.
To summarize text, do any of the following:
Summarize text: Click Summary.
Summarize the key points of the text: Click Key Points.
Organize the original text in a list: Click List.
Organize the original text in a table: Click Table.
A rewritten version of your text appears.
After viewing the summary, do any of the following:
Copy the summary: Click Copy.
Replace the original text with the summary: Click Replace.
Note: Replace doesn’t appear if the original text can’t be edited—for example, if it’s in a webpage.
Compose text
In macOS 15.2 or later, if you turn on the ChatGPT** extension, you can compose text with Writing Tools. To get started with ChatGPT, see Use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence.
Note: You must be at least 13 years old or the minimum age required in your country to consent to use ChatGPT. For more information, see OpenAI Terms of Use.
Control-click the document, choose Writing Tools, then click Show Writing Tools.

Click Compose.
Describe what you want ChatGPT to write—for example, “A bedtime story about a girl who visits a magical world where she befriends a caterpillar on its journey to becoming a butterfly”—then press Return.
If you’re asked for more details, do one of the following:
Add more details: Click a field, enter your response, then click Send.
Continue without adding more details: Click Ignore.
After viewing the text, do any of the following:
Rewrite text: Click .
Incorporate suggestions by ChatGPT: Click an option, then click Send.
Undo a change: Click .
Add a photo or document: Click .
When you’re finished, click Done.
