Marina's chat room (stylized ♪MARINA'S CHAT★ROOM♪) is a series of chat logs available in the Octo Expansion.

During the Octo Expansion, Marina hacks into Agent 8's CQ-80 device and uploads logs of some chat sessions that she wanted to share. The chat participants are Marina (DJ_Hyperfresh), Pearl (MC.Princess), Cap'n Cuttlefish (CraigCuttlefish), and Marie (Agent 2).

Unlocking

Chat sessions are unlocked by completing specific stations, even if the player uses the "Ask for Help" option to complete the station. Stations are grouped as detailed in the table below; these groupings are used internally by the game and not shown to the player. Beating any one station in a group will unlock the next chat log. Only one chat log can be unlocked per group. Chat logs will always unlock in the same order regardless of which group the player clears.

The last chat session, labeled "Bonus Track", is unlocked by completing all 80 stations, even if the player uses the "Ask for Help" option.

Trivia

  • One of Pearl's nicknames for Marina, "DJ Cold Breakfast", is a reference to the European Splatfest from November 2017, Warm Breakfast vs. Cold Breakfast, in which Marina chose Team Cold.
  • In the English localization, Cap'n Cuttlefish's quote "No fan of hip-hop is a foe of mine, I don't see genre" and his previous quote "No fan of the Inkantation is a foe of mine, I don't see species" are cultural references to those who say "I don't see color" when talking about race relations in real life. Said people may mean well, but the phrase is generally taken as an insult to those it is spoken to, hence Pearl and Marina's less than enthusiastic reactions to the phrases.
  • The running gag where Cap'n Cuttlefish has difficulty navigating his keyboard differs depending on the language:
    • In the original Japanese version, he initially types with Latin letters, which are considered "half-width" in comparison to "full-width" Japanese characters. When Marina guides him to use full-width characters, he ends up using half-width kana instead. Later, when he starts typing with full-width characters, he does not use kanji at any time, unlike Pearl, Marina, and Marie.
    • In the Russian localization, he initially communicates with the KOI-8 codepage. This causes his text to display incorrectly, leaving Pearl unable to understand him.[1] After Marina tells him to check his settings, he briefly types with Latin letters.
  • The chat room is the first place to show the in-universe file extensions: .frsh and .mp8.
  • In the interview contained in Octotune, when asked what she does in her free time, Pearl mentions how she cannot stop chatting online recently, a possible reference to Marina's chat room.
  • In the Russian localization, it is mentioned that the chat application is called Караська (Karaska). This may be a reference to the Russian chat app ICQ and carp fish.
  • The Ebb & Flow (Demo) song file finishes with the leitmotif from Hero Mode - Onward!, the short melody when a player completes a level in Octo Canyon.
  • In the bonus chat log, Cap'n Cuttlefish responds to Marina's request to leave with "As you wish". This may be a reference to the 1973 fantasy romance novel The Princess Bride.
  • Cap'n Cuttlefish mentions Marina using 'the head', a nautical term for the toilet.
