Vermillion is a city in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is the county seat of Clay County, and it became a city in 1877.[6] Vermillion is the 12th largest city in South Dakota; 11,695 people lived there at the 2020 census.[5] The city is home to the University of South Dakota, a major college in the state.
