The Elephant is an online Pan-Africanist news site based in Kenya that started in 2016.[1] It is published by a team of journalists including John Githongo, an anti-corruption activist.[1][2][3] It publishes articles, cartoons, podcasts, and videos about Africa. It is a member of the Progressive International along with other left-wing organizations.[4] Because of its political writing, the government of Uganda made Ugandan internet companies ban the website during the 2021 elections.[5] Many of the writers at The Elephant used to write for the Nation Media Group. The writers left NMG under pressure from the Kenya National Intelligence Service.[6]
