It owes its name to its location of discovery : the Glandore iron mine in County Cork (Ireland). It forms pseudocubic rhombohedral crystals not exceeding 2 mm, and aggregates or powdery crusts of pale yellow, pale green to dark green or sometimes yellow-brown to brown.
Occurrence in Wales: corkite has only recently been discovered in Wales (Cotterell and Todhunter, 2007) forming, minute euhedral crystals in iron stained quartz veinstone from Frongoch mine, in the Central Wales Orefield.
Corkite is the phosphate analogue of beudantite and with it, a complete solid solution range exists. Corkite will also form a solid solution with kintoreite. Corkite is named after County Cork, Ireland; the location where the first notable amount was discovered in 1869.
Empirical Formula: PbFe 3+3 (PO 4) (SO 4) (OH) 6. Environment: Secondary mineral formed at low temperatures or by weathering in oxidized hydrothermal base-metal deposits. IMA Status: Valid Species (Pre-IMA) 1862. Locality: Glandore iron mines, Co. Cork, Ireland. Link to MinDat.org Location Data.
