Klaipėda (pronounced [ˈkɫɐɪˑpʲeːd̪ɐ] ( listen); German: Memel) is a ceety in Lithuanie situatit at the mouth o the Danė River whaur it flows intae the Easter Seas. It is the third lairgest ceety in Lithuanie an the caipital o Klaipėda Coonty.
The ceety haes a complex recordit history, pairtially due tae the combined regional importance o the Port o Klaipėda, a uisually ice-free port on the Easter Seas, an the Akmena – Danė River. It haes been controlled by the Teutonic Knights, the Duchy o Proushie, the Kinrick o Proushie, the German Empire, the Entente States immediately efter Warld War I, Lithuanie as a result o the 1923 Klaipėda Revolt, an the Third Reich follaein the 1939 German ultimatum tae Lithuanie. The ceety wis incorporatit into Lithuania durin its tenure as a Soviet Socialist Republic an haes remained athin Lithuanie follaein its re-establishment as an unthirld state.
The population shrank frae 207,100 in 1992 tae 177,823 in 2011, maistly due tae suburbanisation. Popular seaside resorts foond close tae Klaipėda are Nida tae the sooth on the Curonian Spit, an Palanga tae the north.
