Dan Shechtman (Ebreu: דן שכטמן; born Januar 24, 1941 in Tel Aviv)[1] is the Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at the Technion – Israel Institute o Technology, an Associate o the US Depairtment o Energy's Ames Laboratory, an Professor o Materials Science at Iowa State Varsity. On Aprile 8, 1982, while on sabbatical at the U.S. Naitional Bureau o Staundarts in Washington, D.C., Shechtman discovered the icosahedral phase, which opened the new field o quasiperiodic crystals.[2] He wis awairdit the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for "the discovery o quasicrystals".[3] Shechtman is the fowert Israeli tae win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in unner a decade.[4]
