Show bytes added on diff pages
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

On the mobile diff page, we show the bytes changed above the diff like so:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1177732218

To help us consolidate the 2 experiences, and avoid removing existing information {we should consider include the information in the desktop diff markup.

To begin with this can be hidden by default to avoid requiring a designer.

TODO

  • In a new element between mw-diff-ntitle3 and mw-diff-ntitle2 we will output the bytes added/removed.
  • In all skins this will be hidden by default but appear in the HTML markup. Gadgets will be able to reveal this information if needed
  • In Minerva skin we will reveal this information.

When we were investigating new designs for mobile diffs we concluded that this information wasn't useful on the diff page. It serves a purpose on page histories, helping editors understand which edits added or removed small/large amounts of content, but once you're on the diff it's clear what has happened in an edit. Additionally, new users are confused by it - assuming that it might be some kind of score or judgement on how good the edit is. As such, declining this task.
