browsearchive allows to see a deleted log entry but not to view its content
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

On Russian Wikipedia, I am a member of the "Arbitration committee members" group but not an administrator. Thus, I cannot delete pages, revisions, or log entries, but I can view deleted revisions because the membership in the "Arbitration committee members" group grants the browsearchive right.

I am trying to view a deleted block log entry. When I am not logged in, I don't see it in the block log of the blocked user. When I am logged in, I can see it in the log as:

  • (show) 14:54, 16 April 2015 (username removed) (log details removed) (edit summary removed)

"show" is a hyperlink, and I click it.

Actual Results:

I get an error:

Permission error
You do not have permission to delete revisions, for the following reason:
The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Administrators, Oversighters.

Expected Results:

I see all removed details of this log entry.

Event Timeline

Where are you viewing this log entry? On Special:Log/block, Special:Contributions, or somewhere else?

Where does the link to "show" go?

On my account with full admin rights, the log entry looks like this on Special:Contributions:

(change visibility) 22:12, 21 September 2011 Blocking Admin (discuss | contribs | block) (log details removed) (vandalism-only account)

The link to "change visibility" points to Special:RevisionDelete for the given log entry.

So, if the "show" link is the same as "change visibility", this request is basically to modify Special:RevisionDelete so that users with browsearchive can still see the deleted log entry there, even if they can't change its status.

I cannot see blocks on Special:Contributions. I am viewing Special:Log/block. The "show" link goes to Special:RevisionDelete: https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RevisionDelete&target=Special%3ALog%2Fblock&type=logging&ids=33182256 (the actual link has localized names for the namespaces and the RevisionDelete page) So yes, it seems that it is the same as "change visibility" but with different supposed outcome.
If I manually replace RevisionDelete by Undelete in the URL (by the analogy with the URLs for viewing the deleted revisions, see below), I get an even more cryptic error message: "Permission error. You do not have permission to view a page's deleted history, for the following reason: The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Administrators, Arbitration committee members." (Note that actually I am an Arbitration committee member.)

In fact, I just found out that there is a similar problem with the usual deleted revisions (of a page that is not deleted itself). I can see the deleted revisions with Special:Undelete and view diffs, and clicking the timestamps bring me to the pages like https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Colt_browning&diff=86161181&unhide=1 allowing me to see the deleted revisions. However, if I click the link "show" near the deleted revision entry in the page history, I go to Special:RevisionDelete with the permission error. In this case replacing RevisionDelete by Undelete helps more or less (it just shows the list of deleted revisions, not the exact deleted revision I was trying to view).

It works differently with the deleted pages. The deletion log entry looks like

  • 20:24, 11 April 2013 Rubinbot II talk contribs deleted page ИНЕСНЭК (бот: П1 - перенаправление на удалённую или несуществующую страницу) (view)

and the "view" link goes to Special:Undelete showing me the deleted history with clickable diffs and timestamps without any spurious "show" links.

This request is to make the "show" links work (at least in the logs). It doesn't matter whether to do it using RevisionDelete or Undelete under the hood.

Access to Special:Revisiondelete with "arbcom" user group in ruwiki is not as full, as it should be.

Ruwiki ArbCom user group has rights: oathauth-enable, browsearchive, deletedhistory, abusefilter-log-detail. deletedtext.

I am not admin now and this "arbcom" flag should give me the opportunity to see deleted versions that are not oversighted.

https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Revisiondelete&target=Special:Log%2Fblock&type=logging&ids=77572265 - I cant see deleted block record. I should though - it can be a matter of arbitration case. Colleague administrators have already helped me in this issue, but I would like it not to arise again.

Pages that are deleted as whole are available to me. But when a single edit is removed I can't see anything:
https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Revisiondelete&type=revision&target=Пандемия_COVID-19&ids=109858014

It says "Запрошенное действие могут выполнять только участники из групп Администраторы, Ревизоры." = "The requested action can only be performed by members from the Administrators, Oversighters groups."

A member of the Wikipedia arbitration committee in Russian should be able to see everything that administrators should be able to see, please, fix that bug 🐸

@Urbanecm - hi! please, if it is possible, tell me, how can I use "&unhide=1" if I want to access https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&logid=64555766 ?

Sorry if I didn't understand you correctly and it's impossible.

Hi @Carn, so far, I'm unable to find any hack that would reveal log entries. @DannyS712, I recall we discussed something like this recently, do you have any idea?

Not that I can recall, sorry

Does https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&logid=64555766&unhide=1 show anything different?

Nope, same as without "unhide=1".

Since arbitrators often have to double-check admin decisions, I think it's very important that there are non-admin arbitrators. As a result of bugs, arbitrators lack the rights they need to do their job, which is annoying.

browsearchive is only for the search form on Special:Undelete

It sounds as this is fixed with T301928, would be nice if this can be tested on ruwiki
