Congratulations, Dear Administrator!

edit

English | español | français | العربية | Nederlands | русский | +/−

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our gift is better than the one at Commons or Meta)

Here's your badge: {{User admin}}/{{#babel:admin}} and {{Admin topicon}}. Enjoy!

Congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat, Wikidata:Requests for comment, and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-admin @ irc.freenode.net. If you need access, you can flag someone down at @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Wikidata:Guide to Adminship to be useful reading. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (Check Wikipedia:Wikidata/Wikidatans (Q14964498).)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators. You may also like to add your username to this list if you would not like that items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

I need help please

edit

Hello. When I tried to add a description to Q15975817, it couldn’t publish my edit. I tried again and it is still not working. Can you help please? Thanks. Arthurfan828 (talk) 23:00, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Arthurfan828: Hello, it's odd that you are not able to add it. It's probably because the javascript of your browser is turned off or something but I can't exactly say why from here. In this case I added the description :)-BRP ever 23:44, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

Just a question about the rev del process: do you think the vandalism should have been rev deleted at the same time? Or do you think it's normal that it's now untracable by the user? --- Jura 13:10, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jura1:, I am not sure what you are trying to ask here but a run of the mill vandalism is not RevDeled. You can read more about it here.-BRP ever 13:11, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure if had a look at the two diffs I provided in the in question, but you will notice that following the deletion of the username, the vandalism edit now become disconnected. --- Jura 13:16, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it will affect anything in that case. "Username removed" will be displayed and link to userpages will be removed as a part of RevDel process.-BRP ever 13:23, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well, now I can't really find out who vandalized the page even if it can be seen that it had been vandalized. Effectively this protects the LTA and enables them to vandalize in a stealth way. --- Jura 13:30, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jura1: the user is already blocked so there is not much point in you finding out who it was now.-BRP ever 13:49, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
From the explanation given, it seems it wasn't a single account, but a long term issue. Oddly the user name wasn't seen to be offensive for several months. --- Jura 13:51, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well, this shows that we need more active and capable people to monitor such cases.-BRP ever 13:54, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Or maybe, the stewart wasn't that offended. What do you think of the stealth aspect? --- Jura 13:56, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
That's out of the question because the admin will obviously block such username before revdel.-BRP ever 13:59, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure if I understand your comment. The edit has become stealth as a result of the deletion of the username. --- Jura 14:05, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Is it just a problem that I see or is the problem generated by username supression something you understand? --- Jura 08:15, 21 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jura1:, admins don't delete revision to make edits stealth. They do it for the reasons mentioned here.-BRP ever 09:32, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
The discussion was about the deletion by the candidate of the name of the vandal, not the edit (once the edit is deleted, one couldn't see it anymore anyways). The point is that deleting the name of the user make it stealth vandalism. It's probably a complex effect of admin tools, possibly not noticed by admins as they keep seeing it (I guess). --- Jura 14:39, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Flagging

edit

Indications of paid editing by special:contributions/Rafcan Allam and with what they are doing it is either a returned editor or someone working through a script. I haven't been seeing it recently, so it could be my blindness, or just quietness. No other evidence at this time so not prepared to start an RfCU.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:07, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@billinghurst: Yeah, blocked the account as promotion-only and deleted the page. No other related accounts found.-BRP ever 01:55, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

What Is my Fault !

edit

Dear Admin My User Name Is User:Auramstate. I found I am locked globally and Blocked from Wikidata. given Reason is CheckUser block. editing (sitewide), account creation disabled. Still, I can not understand my mistake. Would you please help me? I am not worried about the block and lock I just want to know the exact reason. Even not only me, but there are also 4 users in my office all are blocked from wiki data and locked globally. I am not a huge contributor to the wiki so my user blocking is not important and I am not talking about unblocking me. I just need to find my mistake. 45.118.105.26 12:05, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Share your IP Masking comments and suggestions

edit

Hello BRPever,

In line with global trends about user data collection and use, the Wikimedia Foundation will be masking IPs to protect user privacy but would also be building tools to ensure abuse mitigation on our wikis continue to function well in the absence of IP addresses. We would like to know, how will IP Masking impact you? Also which tools will you need to be able to effectively govern the projects in absence of IPs?

Kindly read more about the project and the tools we are currently working on, you can offer critique, you can also suggest your own. Please use the talk page for this.

Best regards,
Anti-Harassment Tools Team

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Q110242813

edit

Sammy Fox (Q110242813) is being used by c:Creator:Sam Tarling page, which is now broken. What was the content of the page, and if there was anything there, can it be restored? --Jarekt (talk) 01:37, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Jarekt, the item in itself doesn't meet the notability policy. And I am not sure if a link to the creator page is sufficient enough to fulfill the structural need here. IMO, the creator page should be for the people notable per wikidata policy instead of it being the other way around. The author in the files can be changed to the original form, or just the name without adding the template. Thanks -- BRP ever 02:16, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
An Commons creator templates are used because there is structural need for them: we keep track of information useful for disambiguation and of dates of death used to determine copyrights. So templates are very useful. I do not know anything about "Sam Tarling", but I do not recall any other cases of items on Wikidata being deleted which support templates on Commons. They mostly fall under second clause of Wikidata:Notability as "clearly identifiable conceptual entity" which "can be described using serious and publicly available references". If such page is deleted than you should at least move all the data about the person to Commons, so you do not break the template, which then gets deleted. --Jarekt (talk) 04:50, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jarekt Unless I am mistaking something here, the page at commons clearly says a creator page is for anybody who is an author or creator of works hosted on Commons and meets notability requirements for Wikidata items, Commons categories or for Wikipedia articles. It also says, it is not for Wikipedia and Commons users, as well as photographers from image-hosting websites, like Flickr, who do not meet notability criteria. And in this specific case, the subject of the item doesn't meet clause two since there is a clear lack of publicly available references describing the topic. It seems the creator page at commons has been deleted and the author name in the files has been fixed, which in my opinion is a better solution here. Thanks -- BRP ever 07:00, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Similarity in user pages

edit
  • User:Deshonboy
  • User:DBplus
  • User:Amber9990
  • User:15quadri

Have you noticed how similar so many of the blocked users are despite being from different checkuser cases? Does it suggest a larger connection? --Trade (talk) 00:51, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Trade, It is possible. I have been looking into it, and it's extremely likely that they are the same group based on the pattern. The problem here is that they use very crowded ranges and it is very difficult to verify in these cases. But yes, I think there is a larger connection.--BRP ever 00:59, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Have you tried to ask the CU's on English Wikipedia if they have seen this pattern before? --Trade (talk) 01:44, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

My account, which I have entered nearly 40 data in the last 2 months, has been hacked for no reason. Authorities delete me without review and suspend me. While trying to get rid of people who complain about the data I opened for no reason, while looking for a way, the rope throws a ban. Please unban my dear authorized account, I am a citizen who contributes to wikidata, please do not leave the purpose of the site, I am waiting for your reply

Checkuser requests

edit

Some of the checkuser requests are almost a month old. Any chance you could help with the backlog? Trade (talk) 21:42, 22 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Trade A lot of those requests are unnecessary. If the accounts are blocked as duck, no further checks are required in most cases with few exceptions where:
  1. There is a high likelihood of sleeper accounts
  2. Checks are necessary for record keeping
  3. You are questioning the judgement of blocking admin.
The best way to minimize the backlog would be to check only when necessary for a very good reason.--BRP ever 01:01, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello, the item is someone I admire from a distance (more like a role model), and the fact that an item I created was deleted makes me less motivated because I am learning to be an editor.
And i am not being paid cos i haven't see the person talk less of being in touch, Awaiting your Reply, thanks. QDJ22 (talk) 01:23, 29 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello man, I am still waiting for your reply
I will still urge you to look into this and undelete it because there is a private fanbase about this item and anyone from it can recreate the item and this might reoccur again which i believe it should be sorted it out now in order to avoid things like this again, thanks QDJ22 (talk) 21:31, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
