Abstract
The data in Table 3.1 show the general effects of changes in spinning technology in Japan, i.e. their overall labour-using character is demonstrated by the substantial decline in the capital-labour ratio between 1886–90 and 1891–5. This capital shallowing was combined with an equally dramatic decline in the capital-output ratio. Innovational intensity was large enough to provide an increase in average labour productivity despite the strong labour-using bias of the changes adopted (Fei and Ranis, 1965).
