Abstract
The spaces of Russian cities are now undergoing a transitional period. Both social relations, filling them, and the material environment are changing. This is particularly obvious in the case of industrial territories, which, as a result of global processes of de-industrialization and production transfer away from cities, end up in decline. A strategy of reviving such territories is to use their authenticity as a resource. The purpose of this article is to design an integral concept of authenticity in relation to the space production process, and to try and test this concept using the example of Fabrichnaya street in Novosibirsk. The space production process is interpreted from A. Lefebvre's point of view and includes spaces of representation, representation of space and spatial practices. In the research, authenticity is perceived as a multidimensional phenomenon including objective and subjective dimensions. The objective dimension refers to formal indicators produced by experts on which places can be classified as authentic. The subjective measurement includes aesthetic perception of space as an object of consumption, and on the other hand, the feeling of conformity to the own identity, rooted in social space. The sources of information used were the materials of semi-formalized interviews, the media, the register of cultural heritage objects, observation materials and the 'DublGIS' geographic information system. The following essential conclusions were made. Objective authenticity can be used by commercial forces and act as a competitive advantage attracting the connoisseurs of the antiquity aesthetics, while subjective authenticity can become the basis for the production of a contemporary art exhibition. But besides the resource role of authenticity, a restrictive one can alos be noted, when, on the one hand, the officially recognized 'historicity' of a place and its legislative protection lead to transformation limitations, on the other hand, the subjective feeling of 'the own' space encourages residents to struggle for its permanence.
