Exploring the synergistic effects of warm and cold standby units in availability modelling and assessment of complex series-parallel systems

Abstract
This paper presents an in-depth exploration of a mixed standby strategy incorporating both warm and cold standby units for enhancing system availability. The study introduces five distinct serial system configurations, denoted as A, B, C, D, and E, wherein each configuration comprises a main unit along with warm and cold standby units. Differential difference equations are employed to model these systems and calculate their long-run availability. Additionally, the paper determines the optimal configuration based on system availability analysis. The numerical experiments are presented through tables and graphs, revealing that configuration C emerge as the optimal choice. The findings emphasise the effectiveness of incorporating both warm and cold standby units in series-parallel systems, ultimately leading to improved system availability.
