Reconsidering the History of Working Time (Western Europe, XIV-XIX Century)

Abstract
Questo articolo riesamina la questione del tempo di lavoro nel lungo periodo, utilizzandouna serie di casi di studio per identificare, nella loro diversità, l’orario di lavoro giornaliero, il calendario annuale dei giorni effettivamente lavoratie il contenuto del lavoro. Questo ci porta a mettere in discussione il modello concordato di un’evoluzione in tre fasi: a) un tempo di lavoro non misurato e orientato al compito prima dell’industrializzazione intensiva; b) un forte aumento legato alla prima industrializzazione; e c) una continua diminuzione dalla metà del XIX secolo a oggi. Se guardiamo alla scala degli individui e alle mansioni da svolgere, vediamo che la durata della giornata lavorativa è stata oggetto di molti conflitti fin dal Medioevo e può già avere ampiezze che non vengono superate durante l’industrializzazione. Il numero di giorni lavorati in un anno è estremamente vario, tanto che è illusorio cercare di stabilire delle medie. Inoltre, se dopo gli anni Quaranta dell’Ottocento si verificò un declino relativo e non uniforme, esso fu quasi sempre accompagnato da un’intensificazione dello sforzo produttivo, che spesso rese il lavoro più faticoso
