Determinantes socioeconómicos y demográficos del crimen en Chile

Abstract
Este trabajo, pionero en nuestro país, analiza los determinantes de la criminalidad en Chile a nivel regional por medio de la estimación de un panel estático para las trece regiones geográficas entre 1988 y 2000. Basándose en el modelo teórico tradicional de Becker-Ehrlich, este estudio plantea un modelo empírico que incluye diversas variables asociadas a los incentivos para delinquir tales como: medidas de los ingresos en actividades legales (laborales) e ilegales (delincuencia), las oportunidades de ingreso legal representadas por medio de la tasa de desempleo regional y medidas de la efectividad del sistema policial a nivel regional, por medio de la razón de capturas realizadas sobre delitos denunciados. Adicionalmente, el modelo incluye características demográficas y socioeconómicas que presumiblemente están asociadas al nivel de criminalidad: la composición etaria, de género y la composición urbano-rural de la población regional, el nivel de escolaridad y analfabetismo e índices de pobreza y de
