Agglomeration and clusters: Tools and insights from coagglomeration patterns

Abstract
Geographic clusters have received first‐order policy attention despite our limited academic knowledge about them. I explain how coagglomeration patterns of industries can inform the analysis of clusters by allowing us to better delineate them; to explore the causal mechanisms underlying them; and to more finely assess their impact on various economic outcomes. Agglomération et grappes : outils et idées émergeant des patterns de co‐agglomération. Les grappes géographiques ont reçu l'attention des spécialistes de politiques à un premier niveau, malgré la connaissance académique limitée qu'on en a. L'auteur explique comment les patterns de co‐agglomération des industries peuvent informer l'analyse des grappes en nous permettant de mieux en tracer les contours, d'explorer les mécanismes causatifs qui les sous‐tendent, et d'apprécier plus finement leur impact sur divers résultats économiques.
