Abstract
Eingriffe der öffentlichen Hand im Bereich des Sports können mit dem zusätzlichen gesamtwirtschaftlichen Nutzen legitimiert werden, der sowohl mit der aktiven Ausübung als auch dem passiven Konsum von Sport verbunden ist. Sportausübung wirkt sich positiv auf den Gesundheitszustand der Bevölkerung und damit auf Produktivität und Wachstum aus. Wettkampfveranstaltungen sind mit positiven externen Effekten für die Tourismuswirtschaft verbunden, die in empirischen Studien nachgewiesen werden können. Diese gesamtwirtschaftlichen Externalitäten, aber auch Informationsdefizite sowie verteilungspolitische Probleme können jedoch zur Folge haben, dass der private Sektor nicht genügend zur Finanzierung des Sports beiträgt bzw. dass zu wenig Sport ausgeübt wird.
