Abstract
This study presents the results of a primary, multi-stage research about the possibilities of measuring the performance of tourism in different regions. It proposes a database and tests a global, multi-component index for measuring the performance of 51 settlements in the region of Lake Balaton with special attention to its tourism. The Balaton Region as the target area of the research was chosen as it is the second most popular domestic destination of Hungary. There were 42 different indicators involved in the research, which were grouped into the following five components: tourism, economy, infrastructure, demography and employment. The five components – without any weighting yet – were all merged into a final one, called Complex Tourism Index (CTI). Th is global index makes it possible to measure and compare the performance and development level of each settlement (or region) from the viewpoint of tourism. Later on the scope of this present research could be extended into other regions of the country and the index could be used in case of any other destinations.
