Idol

Idol is a language- and platform-independent IDL and encoding for zero-copy serialization of structured data. It’s designed to be efficient, portable, and simple to implement.

Idol aims to bring the ergonomics of Protocol Buffers to local IPC. It is well-suited for low-latency communications between mutually-untrusted processes on a single machine, between a kernel and userland, or between a hypervisor and VM guest. Idol’s binary encoding is structurally similar to Fuchsia’s FIDL, but with the Fuchsia-specific aspects altered or removed.

The Idol specification (this repository) is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. The reference implementation is https://github.com/jmillikin/go-idol, which is licensed under the zero-clause BSD license.

Goals

The design of Idol is driven by four core goals, which set it apart from other serialization formats such as Protobuf, FIDL, and Cap’n’Proto.

Efficient: Idol should be fast enough to be a viable competitor to hand-written C struct pointers for low-latency communication over shared memory. It doesn’t have to be faster than memcpy(), but it should be able to beat D-Bus and go toe-to-toe with Netlink.

Portable: Idol should avoid design decisions that unreasonably constrain the platforms it can run on, such as assuming minimum/maximum pointer widths. It doesn’t need to run on a PDP-11, but 32-bit WebAssembly and 128-bit CHERIoT are both in scope.

Simple: The Idol specification should be simple enough that a person of ordinary skill in the art could go from an empty directory to a working decoder within a few hours. Writing a basic implementation of the IDL parser and compiler should be a matter of weeks, not months.

Bounded: Idol is intended to have a bounded development lifecycle — in other words, it can at some point be considered "complete". This goal is why Idol does not have its own IPC/RPC protocol, and why language-specific codegen options are decoupled from the schema compiler.

Stability

Currently the Idol specification is not yet stable. While the the binary encoding is not expected to change, the IDL syntax and compiler semantics may be modified in backward-incompatible ways as the specification matures. This may cause the specification and reference implementation to get out of sync from time to time.

The author’s intention is for Idol to become a stable (frozen) format so that implementations in multiple languages have identical and predictable behavior.

A basic Idol schema file that defines a User record looks like this:

Idol messages are decoded in-place by validating the content of each field, and modifying indirect fields to contain (bit-shifted) data offsets.

Validation proceeds recursively, as the generated code knows the tag and type of each field in the schema it was generated from.

Future development

The following features are planned before Idol stabilizes.

  • At least one complete implementation of the specification, fully tested with the language-independent files in testdata/.

  • A syntax specification (including ABNF) for the text encoding. It should be possible for users to write .idoltext files as an alternative to JSON or YAML, with predictable parsing across all implementations.

  • A compact encoding similar to Protobuf, so that simple non-zerocopy use cases can be handled without pulling in a second IDL.

  • Developer tooling such as an auto-formatter (à la clang-format or gofmt) and an AST-based plugin for at least one widely-used editor (similar to rust-analyzer).
