Etymology

From Proto-Italic *plāngō, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂k-, *pleh₂g- (to strike).[1]

Cognate with Latin plēctō, Ancient Greek πλήσσω (plḗssō), Old Church Slavonic плакати (plakati), Dutch vloeken.
