From pigg +‎ svin. Compare Faroese tindasvín and Danish pindsvin. Calque of Ancient Greek ἀκανθόχοιρος (akanthókhoiros) (compare Greek ακανθόχοιρος (akanthóchoiros)), probably through Vulgar Latin *porcospinus, like e.g. English porcupine.
