From Late Latin īnfīnītīvus (unlimited, indefinite), from Latin īnfīnītus (unlimited, infinite), from fīnītus (finished), perfect passive participle of fīniō (I finish; limit; appoint), from fīnis (boundary, limit), possibly from either *fignis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeygʷ- (to stick, set up), or from *fidnis, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd- (to split).
