Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قولاچ (ḳulaç)[1] or قولاج (ḳulac),[2][3] from Proto-Turkic *kulač.[4][5][6] Although Kashgari puts the origin as *kol (arm) +‎ *ač- (to open, to spread),[7] Clauson finds this impossible.[4]
