From Proto-Germanic *kairijaną, *kaurijaną (to turn, sweep), from Proto-Indo-European *gers- (to twist, bend, turn).

Cognate with Old Frisian kēra, Old Dutch kēren, Old High German kēren (to turn, direct). Possibly also related to Old Norse keyra (to drive, set in motion).
