From Proto-Brythonic *alchwedd, by metathesis from Proto-Brythonic achlwedd, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kleh₂w- (hook, peg), with the negative prefix *n̥-.[1] Cognate with Breton alc'hwez,[2] Latin claudo.
