From Middle English costnien, from Old English costnian, subsidiary form of Old English costian (to tempt, try, prove, examine), from Proto-Germanic *kustōną (to try, taste), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵews- (to enjoy, taste). Cognate with German kosten (to taste). More at choose.
