Welcome

edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

հոսիքէն

edit

Hi. I cannot find this anywhere. Where did you get it? --Vahag (talk) 09:45, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's a Western Armenian construction particular to the Istanbul Armenian dialect. It's a cute colloquialism formed from the Armenian word հոս and the turkish stem "-iken (-իքէն)". Although in Turkish any verb can take the stem, in Istanbul Armenian, there are only a handful: հոսիքէն, կայիքէն, չիկայիքէն, երթալնիքէն, գալնիքէն. Due to the paucity of this construction, I argue that these forms should be lexicalized. Since there are many Eastern Armenian colloquialisms on Wiktionary, I thought there should be more attention spent on Western Armenian. — This unsigned comment was added by Pompyxmori (talkcontribs).
I am the only Armenian contributor of this website, and I don't know Western Armenian. I can dig in the literature and occasionally add some stuff, but I will ignore most requests for Western Armenian. If you want to promote your variety here, you will have to contribute yourself. --Vahag (talk) 10:29, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bolis dialect

edit

Hiya @Pompyxmori I just wanted to verify, did you mean that you still speak the dialect that's described in Adjarian's "Քննություն Պոլսահայ բարբառի" book? I can email you a PDF of it if you don't have it. The main features of that dialect was like դուռ is pronounced like [dur], and causatives are -ցունել. Based on what I heard from linguists from Istanbul, I was told that the Istanbul population shifted to speaking standard western, so I’m curious to have a better sense of the kind of dialect that you speak Hovsepig (talk) 08:49, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Hovsepig I misspoke. In the phonological sense, the object of study for most dialectologists, the Bolis dialect is non-existent to the mercy of SWA. On the flip side, the Adjarian's 1902 lexicon is still in use, and its crystallized pronunciation reflects Ottoman-influenced Turkish rather than its contemporary counterpart. However, call me crazy, there are still micro differences between SWA speakers of Beirut and Istanbul, to the extent where I can tell them apart. Also, there is a new SWA accent among younger speakers in Bolis, where stress patterns have started to look more Turkish. For example, Armenian surnames typically have stress on the ultimate syllable, but this has drifted towards the penultimate syllable: e.g. Esayán to Esáyan. Oh that sounds fun to know about :D Hovsepig (talk) 17:07, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Pompyxmori Hi again! I saw your reply and I'd be really interested to hear what you know about Ramgoren (because I don't know anything about it). I would especially be interested to hear what kinds of phono changes you've noticed :D Feel free to email me with a bucket of info (email on my site on my user page) because I'm super interested :D Hovsepig (talk) 02:09, 12 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
